Backup Reference?

Thread needs solution

So far, ALL my backups have been done On-Demand/as desired.  I have a Full and at least 1 differential.....I would Now like to do another New differential.....but here's the problem.....I'm probably going to be out-of-space on my present storage device.  I was wondering? where the "Reference" is stored so that Acronis knows what is NEW data and needs to be in the new differential?  Is that Reference stored in the Program software OR derived from the previous Full and differential info?  Long story short...if I use another storage device, will Acronis know what to do to make that 2nd differential there?  Thanks for bearing-with this newbie!

Robert, with differential backups, Acronis will look for all changes to the source data that have occurred since the initial Full backup for this particular backup sequence was created.

The actual algorithym used by Acronis to determine what that changed data is has not been published as far as I am aware though there has been speculation that this may be done at a sector level for the drive, hence why do a defragmentation will result in a much bigger next backup.

The good thing about doing a differential is that you could delete the earlier one to make room for the new differential backup on your backup drive.  However, if you do delete the older differential backup, then please do a Validation for the backup task in order to reconcile the information held in the Acronis database files for this task.

There have been some changes in the latest 2016/2017 versions for how multiple storage devices are handled but to my way of thinking, this starts to get 'messy' / complicated if you start spreading your backup chain across different backup destinations (for you and for the application).
