Cannot use Win 10 Hello after recovery

Thread needs solution

I recently recovered my entire system from one Win 10 system to another identical machine using one USB key containing the MVP Win PE system and another USB SSD containing the Acronis .tib files. The recovery appeared to go well until I tried to log into Windows. The machines a Dell XPS13 2 in 1 laptops and both have fingerprint readers. Both machines were initially set up with my fingerprint to log into Win 10 using Hello. After I recover on the new system, when I try to use my fingerprint to log in, I get a message saying that Hello cannot be used until it is set up. I then use the password box to log in and the recovery seems to have carried out correctly.

After logging in with the password I set up Hello through the control panel with my fingerprint again and it worked correctly. When i tried another recovery it once again would not recognize my fingerprint and would not allow a login except via password.

Is there any way to get a new system to recognize the fingerprint that was set up in another system?

Jon, for this particular question, I suspect that this is not something that you can port between different machines without setting it up again on each new machine.  I would expect that Microsoft have linked the fingerprint registration to the unique system identification to enhance the security of this protection mechanism.  In a sense this would be akin to their activation technologies which are based on the hardware signature of the system where specific software applications are installed.

You may need to ask this question in the Microsoft forums to get a definitive answer - it is not a subject that I have seen raised in these forums previously as far as I can recall.

Jon,

I think the issue here might be the use of your Microsoft account PIN number.  I believe that the PIN number you setup and associate with your account is held on Microsoft servers not on your local machine.  Therefore you would need to sign into your Microsoft account with PIN number to activate and setup the Hello functionality.

Thank you both Steve and Enchantech. I suspect you both are right and I will go to check out Microsoft fora. It makes sense if triggering Hello needs to interact with their server first, I am probably "wiping out" something on the system that identifies it to Microsoft and I have to recreate the "link" after I have restored.

I'll post back here if I find something meaningful.
