Issue with scheduled backup and Before/After command

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I encounter some odd behaviour with one of my scheduled drive backups to a NAS Storage (QNAP TS-451A).

Where the other scheduled backups creating the backup file (.tib) with the NAS user credentials (file owner) that I specified for the target drive there is one backup job not working as expected.

For that backup job I have specified a Before/after command.

When editing the job, ATI prompts me for the Windows User credentials to run the commands before and after the backup job is completed. But instead of connecting to the target backup storage (NAS) with the credentials of  the target drive, it uses the Windows user credentials of the Before/After command.

I noticed this by looking at the NAS event log while the backup job runs. The event log states that the login for that user  (Before/After command) failes. As a result ATI interrupts the running backup job and states the current backup file (.tib) is in use by another application, which I am unable to identify.

So I go ahead and created a User on the NAS-Server with the same name and password as the Windows local user and assigned appropiate permissions on the target drive (NAS). Now the job runs with out any issues and I can see on the event log the successful login of the user specified.

However the owner of the backup file is a different user, not the one that I set for connection of the target drive.

But how is that? All other backups connecting to the NAS Server with their credential entered with the job and the file (.tib) created is owned by that particular user.

I also tried to delete the job but this didn't helped, also removing the before/after command from the backup job didn't.

ATI still connects to the NAS with a different user, i.e the local windows user.

Any help on how to troubleshoot is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Bodo

Bodo, I have never been asked for credentials for Pre/Post Commands unless the command being run is located on the NAS itself, therefore it seems that you should have entered the NAS credentials not the Windows ones when editing the Pre/Post Commands.

Please see KB 58004: Acronis True Image 2016: Troubleshooting Issues Related to NAS Credentials which still applies to ATIH 2017 and will guide you to where Acronis stores the credentials that you have entered, so that you could remove the incorrect Windows credentials and let the task prompt you again to enter the correct NAS credentials.

Steve, I am logged in as a Windows user (w/o Admin privileges). Therefore, I first need to enter my Windows admin password to run ATI 2017 application to edit my scheduled backups.

On saving the scheduled job, ATI always prompts me to enter the password for the Windows user Administrator again.

The command is a .bat file stored on my local computer.

Bodo, I can understand that you will be asked for your Windows Administrator credentials if you are using a non-Admin account to launch ATIH 2017, but this should always be different to the credentials needed for your NAS access, as otherwise you are giving a free pass to any malware, ransomware to your NAS if your computer become infected.

The KB document I referenced in my earlier post will help you to clear the NAS credentials assuming that these currently are set incorrectly to your Windows account credentials instead of those for the NAS.

Thanks again Steve, with the help of the KB I cleared up some registry entries, i.e for a previously used ftp connection to my NAS server,

this connection is no longer in use.

I will post to see if it helped with my backup.

Thanks

Bodo

I followed the KB article, but it still not working properly, so I added some Screenshots:

1.For the backup job BVUDISK_E_Tagesimage I specified a user QNAP_Acronis

2.This is an extract of NAS server Event log when ATI2017 creates the Backupfile on the NAS server

As you can see, ATI did not use the account "QNAP_Acronis" as specified instead it uses the user Administrator.

3. When the backup job is done, the tib file on the NAS server is owned by a user Administrator, again this

user wasn't specified in the backup job options, see 1.

I already deleted the backup job and also deleted the .tis file in C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts

but to no avail.

Bodo, if you are still seeing the incorrect user being used for the NAS then this must still be stored on your PC for your Acronis backup task and you need to revisit the KB document I referenced earlier, in particular, the part:

  1. Make sure that True Image window is closed
  2. Clear credentials cache for SMB connections by deleting registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Acronis\Connections\smb

Your earlier post said "I cleared up some registry entries, i.e for a previously used ftp connection to my NAS server," but did you clear the smb entry?

Thanks Steve,

no I didn't cleared the smb entry, because the child entries looked ok.

But I can try this to see if it helps
