New PC, New OS, New ATI all at once... how to read old files

Thread needs solution

For the past three years I've been running ATI 2014 on a Windows 7 Pro PC, backing up to a NAS.

I will soon be getting a new PC, running Windows 10 Pro. I've got the update to ATI 2017 which has not been installed on the Windows 7 PC. I want to keep ATI 2014 there for now. (I do have the licenses to handle multiple PCs).

I plan to install ATI 2017 on the Windows 10 PC. I would like to read the .tib files created by ATI 2014 to bring data into the new PC. I read that ATI 2017 can only read .tib files from ATI 2015 or later. Is this true? I'm not trying to do a disk restore, just file based recovery. Any suggestions for how to accomplish this?

Thanks.

You could boot from your TI 2014 rescue media on the new machine and copy your files from the TI 2014 backup. I'm not sure about the backwards compatibility.

BrunoC,

It should be possible for you to open existing .tib backup files with the 2017 product to copy files from such backup as needed.  The compatibility issue would be with a complete restore operation of an entire disk for example.  You should be able to restore folders and files from an eisting backup image however without issue.

BrunoC, please see KB 1689: Backup Archive Compatibility Across Different Product Versions which contains the official statement on what previous versions of Acronis backup images have been tested to work with later versions of the product.   This document does not show your ATIH 2014 as having been tested to be compatible with ATIH 2017 but that does not mean that it could not be opened by the same.  Other users have reported success in opening backup archives made by older products, but you would need to test this for yourself.

I'd seen KB1689, which is what got me concerned. I guess I won't know if it will work or not until I get the new PC built and running.

Another option I'd considered is creating a Windows backup VHD on the Windows 7 system and then under Window 10 Disk Management, mount the VHD to extract files. Maybe it will work... and maybe not.

At worst case, I'll just share folders and transfer things across the LAN.

Thanks.

BrunoC, there is one further option you can consider in this scenario.

Create your ATIH 2017 bootable Rescue Media and use this to make a full backup of your Windows 7 PC then you would definitely have a compatible backup that is accessible by ATIH 2017 running on your Windows 10 PC.

KB1689 is just really a statement of the testing done by Acronis in regards to backward compatibility, not necessarily a statement of what does or does not work with regards to those backup archives that have not been tested.

Steve... I didn't realize that a bootable Rescue Media could be used to create an image of another system. I may try that. Thanks.
