Older systems...Win98

Thread needs solution

Hi there...name is Bo...i am a newbie with some computer issues.....and in search of some advise.

I own two versions of True image...2015 for an older pc and 2017...for my labtop......just bought.

Mostly i use these for backup for my pc`s at home and it works nicely.

Now i want to make a copy from a old harddisk from  an older pc, it runs on Win98, has a  C:\  wich is  7, 14 Gb , fat 32 .

I want to have an excact copy of this drive....image,....or do you call it clone?

I can take the disk out of the older pc and i can use a hdd docking station (Sharkoon Quickport combo usb 3 type)

What is the best way to make sure that the cloned disk can replace the original one when this is going bad..... It has to be bootable of course .

Can i clone the orinal disk  and save the clone image temperarly on a usb stick...i have two usb 3 entry`s  on my labtop. one for the hdd docking and the second one for a 16 gb usb3 stick for example. And then place the new disk in the docking en copy the image from usb to the disk?

That simple....i dont want to lose any of the information on the original disk during the proces...it can not be missed!

Hopefully you can show me the right way!

Thanks

Bo

Bo, welcome to these user forums.

You have some further challenges than those you have listed in your post above.

Your old Win98 disk drive with the 7.14GB FAT32 Windows partition is most likely to be an old PATA / IDE drive for which you would need to find a suitable replacement physical drive of the same type.

I would suspect that your HDD docking station is for SATA drives only - I have not come across any PATA/IDE docking stations that use USB 3.0 - the only docking stations I have seen have all been SATA only, so to attach the IDE drive to your other computer you would need an IDE to USB adapter if you can still find one.

At this point, my suggestion would be to see if your ATIH 2015 bootable Rescue Media on CD will boot in your Win98 computer successfully - if it can, then most computers of that age had at least 2 IDE connectors on the motherboard, which in turn could provide connections for upto 4 IDE devices, i.e. 1 x CDrom drive and upto 3 x IDE disk drives using 2 cables (each with 2 device connectors).

If the Rescue Media will boot, then you could potentially clone your Windows 98 drive to a second drive connected internally in the computer, though I would strongly recommend making a full backup of the original drive first for safety reasons.

Hi Steve,

Thank you for youre respons, just come back from s shot holiday...have to fix some problems at my work but i will get back to you this weekend!

Best wishes for again a new year!

Bo

Bo, thanks for the update, hope all goes well when you give this a try.  Best wishes to you for 2017 too.

Hi Steve,

Here is a sign of life....had to spend a lot of time at the hospital with doctors and specialist.....no "hobby" time for me, the last day`s.

But, here is the situation we have now. The docking station is a usb 3 ( and down to usb 2 as well) device and there is a special way to connect an ide disk with power  and ide cable, so i can connect an  ide disk with the dockingstation to  my i7 labtop with usb 2 or 3. I thinks that sounds good...to me i mean! Transfor speed is not an issue, i dont care if i takes some time.

I also installed Aconis True Imagee 2015 on my old pc, so i think i can start making an bootable rescue disk with this 2015 version.

I am not an expert in connecting ide disks inside an old computer. If i can do it in a docking station an work safe....i prefer that option.

I dont want to lose or damage information on the the disk, it is still needed, the machine is working.

What do you suggest? Best way is to make a rescue bootdisk, test it if it is working and then let you know how or what?!

What do you think?

Greeting

Bo

I installed my

Create the ATI Rescue Media. Try to boot from it, to see if your system will boot from it. If it won't, adjust the BIOS settings to increase the priority of booting from USB or optical drive, depending upon which medium you use for the Rescue Media.

What do you want to achieve? Do you want an exact copy of the entire Win98 system disk, or just the user files from it?

When done properly, checking the checkbox to backup/image the entire disk, a backup will contain everything that a clone would but will be much safer.

Bo, sorry to hear that you have had to spend time in hospital and hope you are enjoying improved health now.

Which version of Windows is running on the system where you have installed ATIH 2015?
Is this a different system to the one running Windows 98 and has the disk you are wanting to protect / backup etc?

See KB document: 48338: Acronis True Image 2015: Creating Acronis Bootable Media for help on creating the rescue media for this version.

It is good that your dock allows for older IDE disk drives to be connected - do you have any old / spare drives that you could test with before you attempt to connect the Windows 98 disk?

Provided that you can 'see' the attached IDE disk drive from the dock on your computer where the dock is connected to, then you should be safe to then make a backup of that IDE drive.

Another question, does your Windows 98 system have any USB ports that you could connect an external USB backup drive to?

Hi Steve & Tuttle,

Thanks for youre respons.

I am sorry for the late reaction....but my body & health had a bumpy ride the last  two weeks....hope i am getting  it back on track soon again.

There is a little problem with the software at this time.

Version 2015 was uninstalled on my laptop and installed on my old computer.

Version 2017 is installed on my laptop and active, no problem.

However the 2015 version gives an error "to many activations" . Strange, there was never an Acronis product installed on that machine.

I already send an email to Acronis, hope the can help me soon.

This is the status for now....i  will let you know when the problem with the activation are solved!

Greeting

Bo

Bo, see KB document: 48380: Acronis True Image 2015: "You've exceeded the maximum number of activations for this serial number" for the ATIH 2015 activation issue, you should be able to move the license for this from the laptop to the older system by following the steps shown.

Hi Steve,

The problems with the activation have been solved. There was something wrong with the registration of the version 2015.

Also an error because i did not moved the software thr right way! But...problem solved....that the best thing.

I am trying to make an resque disk toninght, let you know how that went, ok?

Grtz

Bo

Bo, glad to hear the activation issue is resolved.

Let me know how you get on with imaging the Win98 system.  I recently was given a Win98 machine to dispose of for a friend so am in a position to try out some things if needed (before it takes a trip to the waste disposal site after being canibalised for any parts worth salvaging!).
