Please Answer Me This: Did ATI trigger a retrograde Win Update?; Incomplete WIN Update History post ATI Recovery.

Thread needs solution

TLDR:

I am concerned because after recovering with A TI from a total and bizarre disaster, possibly triggered by cancelling an ATI D+P backup-in-progress, the only updates listed in my Windows Update History are the ones that were downloded after the recovery. Dunno if an Acronis Recovery omits listings in Win Update History prior to the date of the recovery.

Is it a fair assumption that if my PC was in fact missing past Windows Updates, as opposed to just their not being visible in Update History, that in checking for updates Windows would fill in the blanks?? Or would the Check for Updates work off of the last update only?

Dunno what happened.

I was making a new D+P backup with AcronisTI. Acronis has recently been resulting in weird results on my PC -- it occaisionally adds 50GB of "stuff" to my internal HDD that cannot be identified or found on the HDD via the file system.(I have read here perhaps a VSS issue ) -- this unknown "stuff" will vanish if I update a program (a serendipity found solution). ATI will also on occaision write a grossly oversized backup to my external HDD (I have read here perhaps a bad sector issue forcing Acronis to go into sector by sector mode) I admit to having been remiss in digging in to this issue and contacting support.

Sooooooooo, during this backup I saw that Acronis was doing both - 60% through the backup it was clear that it was making an oversized backup AND had created the 50GB of stuff on my main drive -- so I cancelled it and updated a program to kill the 50GBs. I then did a Restart.

When I restarted I got caught in a "Hi,we have updated your PC" loop:

"Hi"

We've updated your PC"

""Getting things ready, please do not turn off your PC"

I knew that I had received last week's updates and that there was no new update yesterday. It was not the typical Win Update starting screen -- it looked like the screen you see after a Reset or Refresh. That ran for approx 1 1/2 hours. When it finally "completed" my PC was a mess -- most programs would not open and those that did, such as Word, appeared to have reverted to an older version, my settings and desktop layout had changed, etc. I restarted again and on the 2nd and subsequent tries my PC would not boot into Windows - black screen after boot.

I have restored with A TI to a backup I made last week. On the first start after this recovery my PC did another Windows Update -- Last week's Cumulative Update and all that came with it-- this was likely OK - don't recall if I made the backup before or after that update.

I have no clue what triggered the spontaneous "Windows [Retrograde] Update." that borked my PC after I cancelled my ongoing D+P backup.

And now I am somewhat concerned because the only updates listed in my Windows Update History are the ones that were downloded last night after the recovery.

Or does the Check for Updates work off of the last update only?

Thunderhawk, sorry to read of your tale of woe with doing the backup and recovery.

I am not aware of any other user reports of anything similar happening in these forums in terms of the specific problems you have described, in particular losing your Windows Update history information.

As far your backup that you restored, then assuming that you still have this .TIB backup file then you could check whether the Windows Update History information was included in the backup image when it was created.

See webpage: How to Clear Windows Update History which will show you which specific files/folders you need to be looking for that hold this information.  The SoftwareDistribution folder is not normally listed in the default Acronis task Exclusions, so this should be present.

Thanks for the advice Steve :-)

Will do.

I feel uncomfy atm but would rather not have to go back to a much earlier update or perhaps have to do a reset or refresh.
