Problem transfer image to USB hdd when starting True image 2017 from a DVD

Thread needs solution

Hi!

I have problem to take an image with Acronis True Image 2017 when I boot up from a DVD on a HP Z400 computer.Everything starts up as it should but when the transfer to the connected USB hdd should begin nothing happens. There is no message about something is wrong ..... ?

The computer have Windows Server 2003 installed on a single hdd and Its nothing specially about the installation. It has worked earlier with Acronis Backup and Recovery Version 11 with Universal Restore (boot CD) but now I have the same problem with this version 11 too.The "Progress" window keeps standing on 0%.

I have tried the True Image 2017 DVD on another HP Z400 computer, just for testing, with Winows XP installed on it and there it works just fine but I dont need it for that computer.

Do anyone have any idea why the imagetransfer wont start up.Everything else seems to work but when I dont get any message its hard to take this further.

Hakan, welcome to these User Forums.

I have never used Acronis Backup & Recovery or the Universal Restore boot CD so have no experience in that area, but given that your ATIH 2017 DVD works ok on a different computer with XP installed but not on the Windows Server 2003, I would look to what is different between these?

In particular, what filesystem is being used on the server computer?

The ATIH 2017 User Guide: shows the following supported file systems...

Supported file systems

  • FAT16/32
  • NTFS
  • Ext2/Ext3/Ext4 *
  • ReiserFS *

Note: ReiserFS partitions and disks cannot be backed up to Acronis Cloud.

  • Linux SWAP *

The Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.7 Advanced User Guide: shows some differences in what is supported...

Supported file systems

Acronis Backup can back up and recover the following file systems with the following limitations:

  • FAT16/32
  • NTFS
  • ReFS - volume recovery without the volume resize capability. Supported in Windows Server 2012/2012 R2 and Windows Server 2016 only.
  • Ext2/Ext3/Ext4
  • ReiserFS3 - particular files cannot be recovered from disk backups located on Acronis Backup Storage Node
  • ReiserFS4 - volume recovery without the volume resize capability; particular files cannot be recovered from disk backups located on Acronis Backup Storage Node
  • XFS - volume recovery without the volume resize capability; particular files cannot be recovered from disk backups located on Acronis Backup Storage Node
  • JFS - particular files cannot be recovered from disk backups located on Acronis Backup Storage Node
  • Linux SWAP

As you are booting from DVD, I assume that this is using a Linux kernel OS to launch the Acronis application, therefore there are no Windows elements involved here related to the installed Server OS etc.  So if the application lets you choose the disk & partition(s) to backup and is able to see and allow you to select the destination backup drive for where to store this, then there is very little else involved here, unless there is more information that we do not know about?

The filesystem is NTFS and the DVD are using Linux kernel OS to launch the Acronis application. The older version "V11" has worked earlier without problem when I have booted from a cd with a Linux kernel OS.There is no problem when I choose "what to backup".Everything looks as it should do when it works with the cd or the dvd. The problem is that I dont get any message,it just stops.Do You have any ide what I shall look for...?

Can you tell us what the Event Log shows in the DVD app?  When you say that the app just stops do you mean the backup task stops or that the app itself stops working?

The backup task dont start creating the image. The progress window opens up but the vertical "greenn field" wich shows how far the image is created will not begin to increase from the left side.

Hakan, at this point I would ask if you have ATIH 2017 installed on another computer and if so, would recommend creating the alternative Windows PE version of the bootable Rescue Media and trying that with this problem computer.

When you launch the Acronis Rescue Media Builder tool, take the second option to create the WinPE version - this will require that you download and install the Windows ADK that provided the PE components.  The tool will direct you to a Microsoft web page for the download if this is not already installed.  You just need to select the top 3 components for the ADK when you get to the installation page - the other components shown are not needed.

I would not rely on the green bar indicator to determine if the backup is running or not.  Such indicators have been known to be inaccurate and I have experienced myself problems with them.

Does you external HDD have an LED indicator that would show disk activity?  Watching that if available would be better.

Not knowing how much data you are trying to backup and whether or not you are using USB 2.0 or 3.0 it is hard to say how long a backup should take but I would say an hour or two may be necessary.  You might try letting the DVD app run that long and see what happens, you just might end up with a backup file.
