Switching to a new SSD?
I've had a string of broken USB to SATA cords, so I've decided to fully back my computer up into an external hdd - using Acronis - and then swap in the SSD. Could I then use an Acronis Bootable Media USB to restore the backup onto the fresh SSD? Or would this cause some problems?

I'm a little confused by the scenario too. If you have an original OS drive and take a backup of it to an external drive (a backup in .tib format) and then plan to remove/replace the original drive with a different SSD or another SATA drive, then yes, this should work just fine - that's the intention of the backup and recovery process. Just make sure that when you take your backup image, that you backup the entire disk (do a full disk backup with all partitions). When you restore, do a "full disk" restore to the new drive.
Cloning should work the same way, but I personally recommedn a backup and restore over a clone as it provides a backup (just in case) and is less picky about varitions with disks. Even the clone procedures recommedn you take a backup as a precaution, so if you already have backup, just restore it instead of trying to clone to the new disk.
