Acronis True Image 2018 Home automatically sets a password for a backup job.
Using 2018 Home, Build 15470. When I create a new job without a password under the Backup protection option and after saving the job, if I reopen the options dialog, I find a password has been set under Backup protection. This is true regardless of whether (1) the job is a partition backup or a file backup; (2) the job is on a network share or the computer hosting ATIH 2018.
Our environment doesn't require password protected backup files, so I'd like to avoid it. Does anyone know how to prevent this behavior?
Thanks, Currie

Currie, this is caused by using the ‘save as default’ option for one of your backup tasks which then remembers the password for further new tasks. You will need to remove the password settings then repeat the save as default option again.

Steve, thanks so much! Another question: On the jobs that have been created, is there a way to remove the password protection or do they need to be removed and recreated? Thanks, again, Currie

Sorry, once a backup task has been created and a backup archive made, then there is no way to either change or remove password protection.
You would need to delete the backup task and start again, or else use the option to 'Clone settings' for the task then change the settings before running the new task.

Steve, I did as you directed vis-a-vis resetting the default options. When I (1) created a new job, and (2) used the new job to reset the default options so that no password should have been applied and (3) then saved the new job, upon re-opening the options, a password had been applied.
So, of course, the next question is, "Can you think of any other setting that could affect the automatic creation of a password? And, if not do you think uninstalling and reinstall ATIH 2018 would resovle the issue of should I use Acronis' clean up tool, delete the supporting folder structure, and then hand-edit the registry to make sure that Acronis CleanUp Tool has actually deleted all the registry entries?
Again, thanks for the benefit of your experience and your generosity w. your time and that experience.

Currie, very strange that the password protection setting is sticking and not being reset.
If you want to make a clean start, then uninstall ATI via the Control Panel, then download / run the Acronis Cleanup tool (link below) as Administrator to remove all residual files.
There should be no need to touch the Windows Registry as directed by the cleanup tool as this is mainly intended for users who want to completely remove all Acronis applications and not reinstall them again. As far as I understand there is no task setting data stored in the registry other than user credentials for network devices.
Restart the computer after doing the above before reinstalling and creating new backup tasks.

So, I did a straight uninstall from appwiz.cpl. I then reinstalled 2018 Build 15470, rebooted the computer, created a job w/o a password, Saved the job, reopened the options dialog and a password had been set.
I then downloaded the Acronis Cleanup Tool, ran it, and rebooted the computer. I then re-installed 15470, recreated the backup job, saved it, and got the same result.
Again, I uninstalled 15470 using the cleanup tool, rebooted the computer and installed 2019 17750, created a new job, saved it, reopened the options dialog and got the same result: a password in the protection item. See, the accompanying screenshot.
So, I'm still working on it. Any other ideas? Thanks, Currie

Currie, there may be an element of misunderstanding going on here!
Your screen image does not show that password encryption is set but rather shows where you would enter a password and select an encryption method to be used, if you enabled this level of backup protection.
The image clearly shows: Encryption method: None
With this encryption method, there is no password applied, so the password dots shown have no meaning or content.
The screen images below show what you should be seeing if you have password encryption enabled / set.

Steve, thanks for the explanation. You are right: there was "an element of misunderstanding." (There was also a "high element of diplomacy" on your part!). :) Thanks for all the help. You really do embody the best of the MVP spirit: knowledge, patience, commitment to making the product a better and more useful application. In a word, "Couldn't have done it w/o you. Thanks, Currie
