Backup of the C drive

Thread needs solution

Hi,

When creating a backup of the C (OS) partition, what are the advantages of defining it as a (total) disk vs. only the C drive partition? Doing the entire physical drive would add the following:

EFI System Partition

Recovery Partitions (several)

My concern is that when performing a Restore the Acronis Boot Disk program might not know where to place the additional partitions -- my recollection is that there is only one additional partition under the Acronis boot disk. And, what is the likelihood of these additional partitions requiring a Restore? Therefore, would it not be safer to backup only the C partition?

Thank you,

Jordan

Jordon, when making a full disk & partitions backup you need to include the hidden/system partitions if you ever want to make a bare-metal recovery to a new disk drive.

The EFI system partition holds the Windows Boot Configuration Data store without which Windows will not boot.

The Recovery partition holds the Windows Recovery Environment used to help recover from startup issues, etc.

Acronis will correctly write these partitions to a new (or existing) drive when doing a Disk level recovery, i.e. when you select the top most disk entry tick box on the recovery panels, which also avoids needing to specify the size and location for all partitions manually & individually.

Steve, thank you for all your help!

This suggests to me that there's no disadvantage in performing the full drive backup, each and every time (the additional time and storage space are of no concern to me). Right?

Also, just FYI, the Acronis forum is not sending me notifications each time a comment is posted -- yes, I ticked the box...  Sometimes a notification is sent, other times not. Not a big deal, but thought you should know.

Thanks again,

Jordan

Hello Jordan,

have you checked the second box in the Notifications settings in your personal profile?

Thanks for your helpful reply, Ekaterina!

I relied on the check-mark on the individual post, which is pretty much the standard on the many forums I am familiar with. And, indeed, I received several notifications to my inquiries.

If the system requires that both profile and post be checked, as mine are now, it would be helpful to add a comment on this requirement at the bottom of each post.

Thank you again,

Jordan
