Can I safely remove files of unsuccessful backups?

Thread solved

Hello!

I have backed up my laptop last night and run into a few technical issues, which interrupted the download process.

As a result, I have several incomplete and disk space wasting backup files.

Since I don't know enough how the backup actually works, I am wondering if I can just delete the unsuccessful files.

In the attached screenshot, I framed the completed backup and wonder if I can just delete the other ones?

Udor, what version of Acronis True Image are you using here, is it 2018 as per this forum, or is it a different version?

If you have ATI 2019 there is an option for each backup task to 'Clean up versions' which would allow you to delete the unwanted files from within the main GUI.

If you have ATI 2018 or earlier, then the recommended method for deleting old files is by using the Automatic Cleanup options in the task configuration settings for the Backup Scheme, where you can set how many older versions to keep etc.

If you delete these unwanted .tib files using Explorer, then you should perform a Validation of the backup task that created them in order to reconcile the information held by ATI in its internal database.  You will see an error pop-up message for each deleted file where you should take the 'Ignore' options if provided, else the Cancel option.  If you don't validate the task then you would get similar errors when next running the backup task.

I've got ATI 2019, just upgraded before backup!

Thanks for your help, Steve!

Will check it out!

Best!

Udor

Thanks again Steve!

The incomplete backups don't even show up on that list, only the completed one... which makes me think that I could just delete the fractured ones without problems.

I don't want to "clean up" the only version that shows...

If you have AAP active you may need to turn it off in order to delete the incomplete backups.   And remember to turn it back on when you are done.

By the way, are you saying that b2_s1_v3 shows up or none of the b2 files show up?  It's never been clear to me whether ATI even looks at lower numbered v files.  In any case, if you have the b2_s1_v3 file you certainly don't want to clean it up.

Hi Patrick!

This is a screenshot that shows the files on the drive, the one highlighted is the only complete one!

I can see that the earlier files would not be complete backups. Getting back to Patrick's comment, I suspect that there may be some confusion about what is going on - to me it ise clear that when you select Cleanup versions there is only one listed (the successful one). In that case it should be OK to delete the files using Explorer (or you preferred file manager). Of course you will need to temporarily turn off Active Protection.

Ian

PS If you just purchased ATI 2019 you will qualify for a free upgrade (see here for information on ATI 2020 and the free upgrade link).

Thank you Ian!

Yes, I was able to delete those other ones and there's no problem!

I upgraded from 2019 to 2020, but paid $33 (incl tax) and I didn't see a free download link... meaning,... I didn't see your post with a link... crap! :/

Steve, Ian and Patrick:

Thank you guys for all your help!

I have another question, but I think I need to create a new topic for it!

You should be able to get a credit if you paid for 2019 and then for 2020. Contact sales explain the situation.
