Can't recover backup from NAS using USB Linux Based Recovery

Thread solved

Acronis has been backing up to the NAS just fine. (Synology DS418play)

I created the Recovery Media using the USB Linux based. USB boots up just fine.

I can select the NAS and then it asks for UserID and Password and connects. I try to access the first Folder on the NAS and it asks for the UserID and Password again but then fails to connect.

My System is kind of simple. Computer, NAS, and Modem are all connected via a NETGEAR 5-Port Gigabit Switch. My DSL Modem is an (Actiontec TR64 M1000). I can access my NAS from outside my Home too.

Don't know why the Recovery Media asks for the UseID and Password a second time and fails.

I have never tried to access my Synology NAS with recovery media (if am mistaken it would have been several years ago during beta testing). One thing you could try is to use Windows base recovery media which is now the default recovery media. I would try the simple one first.

Support suggested using WinPE recovery media 64bit. I tried that and the Credentials still failed. I saw somewhere to try and use the FTP method and it worked. I was able to browse the NAS and select the Backup Image for Recovery. Strange that the SMP method failed. I have the NAS set for Min=smp1 and Max=smp3.

Timothy, it is recommended to avoid using SMB1.0 where possible as this is insecure and has been removed from the latest Windows 10 upgrades (if doing a new install) for this reason. You can change the NAS settings to have a min of SMB 2.0.

See webpage: Disable SMB Version 1.0 in Windows 10

Thanks for the reminder. I changed the MIN to SMB1 just to see if the Credentials would work. I must have changed it back because it's now MIN=SMB2.

Update and Solution:

Wow this was soo simple once I discovered it.

----------------

Plug in Acronis USB Recovery Drive and reboot into BIOS Boot Menu (F12)
Select the UEFI USB Drive

Select 'Recovery'
Select 'Browse for backup'

In the 'File Name' field, type the following: \\NAS_Name\

Enter Synology NAS UserName and Password when prompted.

(NAS_Name is the Name of your particular NAS on the Network etc...)
