Create a virtual machine using VMware instead of Hyper-V?
Hello all
I found and read the following article regarding creating a virtual machine using Hyper-V: https://kb.acronis.com/content/59986
My question: Is it possible to create a virtual machine (e.g. Windows XP) using a different product, e.g. VMware? And if yes, are there instructions similar to the article mentioned above?
Every answer is highly appreciated!
Thank you and best regards,
Guido
P.S.: I am currently using Acronis True Image 2018.

Guido, you can take a backup of a physical machine with Acronis and restore it to a virtual disk in VMWare just fine. Caveats may require that the VM be set with the same BIOS type first though (MBR/Legacy or UEFI) to match what the original OS was installed on. Also make sure you boot your Acronis rescue media (.iso is easiest) to match the proper method that the old OS was installed as (MBR/Legacy or UEFI).
The problem you're likely to run into though is that this VM, once booted into the OS,will have "different hardware" as far as Windows is concerned, and it's not likely to license unless you have a transferable "Retail box" version. This definitely will not license correctly if it's an OEM Windows license that you're trying to move from the physical system to a virtual system.
Alternatively, if you have VMWare Workstation Pro installed on the system, you can use VMWare converter to convert the physical machine to a VM. However, licensing will still be an issue though if using a non-transferable license or a non-enterprise Windows license.

Hello Ekaterina, hello Bobbo_3C0X1,
Thank you very much for your advice! It will take some time until I really can get to work with VM; I first have to set up my new computer... I just had a look at my XP system: Unfortunately, it's an OEM license, and at the moment, I have no idea how to negotiate that obstacle...
I would be happy to come back when I am concretely dealing with a VM. Thanks again!
Best regards,
Guido
