Disk Backup Options - Backup Scheme & Method Not Processing

Thread needs solution

Greetings;

My settings on my Windows 10 Enterprise deployment are:

  • Backup Scheme = Custom
  • Backup Method = Incremental
  • Create a full version after every 5 incremental versions
  • Store no more than 10 recent version chains
  • Do not delete the first version of the backup

Each day I find a new incremental version but have not seen the incremental versions removed from my external drive.

Is there a setting or .INI file or directoy which I should perhaps remove which could be corrupt?

Thanks....Dave

With your settings shown above, then no incremental versions would be removed until after you have created 10 version chains comprising of 10 x Full backup files and 10 x 5 Incremental files, and then have created a new Full backup file for the 11th version chain.

Acronis will never just delete incremental files - it only works with completed version chains, i.e. a Full along with all related Incremental or Differential backup files (those with the same _b?_ number shown in the file names, i.e. all files with _b2_ in the names.

David,

Steve is spot on.  I don't know what your retention requirements are (how long you need or want to keep backups).  But if a month is good, then you might want to consider bumping the incrementals from 5 to 6 and keeping 4 version chains (basically 4 weeks  with 1 full a week and 6 incrementals = 7 days)  7 days x 4 weeks is roughly 1 month.  Then, once the 5th full has completed, the oldest entire chain will automatically be deleted.

Thank you the posts made it much clearer what I needed to have in the settings. Will make them tonight and adjust if needed!

Excellent! Hope all is well after that. If you're out of room or going to run out of room soon, you can remove some of the existing backup chains with the "clean up versions" setting too.
