How many want logs aviable in True Image?

Thread needs solution

To start with, yes i know that i can download the third party tool MVP Log Viewer to read logs but having them directly aviable in the user interface is critical.

I decided to do a test regarding backups that for some reason partially fail. I wanted to see if I as the end user get any warning or if i had the ability to see why the backup completed with errors and what the error is. I used Acronis True Image 2018, CloudBerry Backup 5.8 and CloudBacko Lite 3.3 and made a local backup and targeted two folders for backup. The first backup ran without issues on all three applications as expected. Then i deleted one folder and ran the backups again and this is what happened:

  • Acronis True Image 2018: Completed successfully. No warnings at all...
  • CloudBerry Backup 5.8: Completed with a warning that says "Warning. One or more backup paths don´t exist."
  • CloudBacko Lite 3.3: Completed with a warning that says "Backup completed with warnings"

CloudBerry Backup was best since the backup job itself changed color from the default light green to light orange/red when it compledted with errors. In CloudBerry Backup and CloudBacko Lite it was easy to find and read the logs to find out what caused the backup to fail.

Acronis True Image 2018 did report the error in the logs when i viewed them in MVP Log Viewer but the backup itself is listed as Operation has succeeded. Since i deliberate deleted one folder i can understand why the operation did succeeded, but the day i delete a folder by mistake i want to know it asap. But there is still no way to access the logs in True Images user interface.

Roger, many users have been asking for the Logs to be put back as an integrated part of the ATI GUI but so far Acronis have not felt the need to do so!

I can only suggest submitting Feedback via the tool provided in the GUI Help section for this request and encourage other users to do the same.

With regard to the need to be notified of errors encountered, then you should use the Notification settings page to be sent an email for each backup action, this will include a copy of the log file contents / messages.

Why would any product not make the logs easier to access?

One of the main issues I have with ATI is that it gives the impression of being an easy to use application thanks to its sleek interface but this hides the complex processes running in the background of which many, unfortunately, aren't as reliable as they should be.

I've had a backup process running with full success for months only to find that ATI decide to throw up errors on restore.

Yet again, after another bizarre backup issue, I'm looking at a replacement backup solution as ATI is failing once more.

What's the point of having a sleek simple interface when the user has to be both aware and wary of numerous operational functions in order to maintain a working ATI backup\restore solution?

I just tried that but it fails due to the inability to select SSL encryption on the Incoming mail server. My ISP requires SSL encryption on both Incoming and Outgoing servers. ATI2018 only provides SSL Encryption on the Outgoing server.

Roger, sorry but you have lost me here a little!

I use a throw-away Gmail address for my ATI Email Notifications, using smtp.gmail.com port 587 which works just fine for sending out the notices.  I use my own ISP email address as the target to receive these notices and have never had any issue that this uses SSL for both incoming & outgoing actions.

ATI is only ever going to be used in an outgoing direction for notifications - there is no provision to specify incoming server details as it is not needed as far as I am aware.

For security reasons my ISP requires applications that send mail to use SSL encryption on incoming and outgoing even if you just send emails. No encryption on incoming=Cannot send mail. This is what they state in all papers i have.

Roger, my own ISP has similar restrictions but only for mail going through their mail servers, not for mail being sent via other service providers.  Many users access multiple different email services so doubt that this would be enforceable.  I use VirginMedia, 1&1, Outlook, Yahoo and Gmail where only VirginMedia is my actual ISP.

O.k, thats good to hear. :)

On the attached image you can see how i filled the form out and what error message i get. I get the same error when sending a test message even if i ignore to fill out the incoming mail server.

The server adresses are just copied&pasted and works in Outlook. The ports are correct as well.

Roger, I get the same error as you if I try to use my own ISP email details for the Notifications page, both for with SSL or TLS ports and with or without the log in to incoming server set etc.

My working settings are as shown below (NTLWORLD is an old name before VirginMedia took them over).

Please note that I needed to set GMAIL to allow 'less secure apps' for this to work with the implementation of email / security used by ATI.
See webpage: Let less secure apps use your account

See also: KB 46840: Acronis True Image: Troubleshooting E-mail Notification Issues and in particular, KB 57875: Acronis True Image: E-mail Notifications to Gmail Fail with "Authentication failed" which deals with the Gmail 'less secure apps' issue too.

O.k, what a pity. I just don´t need yet anoter mail adress. I wish Acronis made it simplier, just as CloudBerry Backup has. The default option there is to just enter the mail adress and that´s it. With this option the logs are sent to CloudBerry´s servers and then redirected to the mail adress. One can also specify servers.

I tested to change the firewall settings to no avail. I will contact my ISP next week to see if it can be solved and in worst case i may get an gmail adress.

But thanks for the help! :)

Roger, I understand and there are a number of improvements that could be made here by Acronis, like the subject of this topic to bring the logs back into the product GUI or simplifying the notification process, using a supported version of SSL etc...

Regarding the Gmail email account, this is my only use of it, so I do not spend any time doing anything else with that account.

Steve, the gmail adress was the way to go and now it works! Thanks for the help! :)

Glad to hear you have it working Roger, thanks for the feedback.

There is an easy solution (only works with ATI 2017 or later). Open Acronis App, select settings, then click on "change email notification settings" this will take you to your web based Acronis control panel where you can set global notifications - much easier than doing so on case by case basis. The notifications are generated by Acronis server, not locally (as in the method you have been using) and is sent by default to the email address associated with your account, but you can select any account or accounts you wish.

Hope this helps

Ian

IanL-S, yes this is much easier! :)

What i really like is that the mails have the green check mark when a backup is completed successfully. The down side seems to be that when i click on Show details in the mail i do not get as detailed specification as i get with the method discussed earlier in this thread.

I did a test backup that contained two folders. The backup completed successfully as expected. Then i deleted one of the two folders. When i ran the backup job once again it completed successfully according to both logs, iow the one sent by using the "per-backup-notification" and the one sent by using the method you described. In the "per-backup-notification" i can see "File or folder 'F:\Folder_01\' cannot be found." while in the log using the method you described says nothing, but the green check mark. (Or, i don´t know how to find it though i tried...)

Don´t get me wrong here, i actually prefer the format of the log i get when it is send to me from Acronis since it communicates with the green check mark for a successfull backup and with a red icon when it fails.

I will create a support ticket since all other backup applications i have tried do actually not complete successfully when source folders are missing and i think that ATI 2018 should inform user about that and not just complete as if nothing is wrong. Other applications alerts the end user that a folder is missing. By not alerting the end user it will create an unpleasing surprise when/if the backup needs to be restored.
