Multiple Backups using Acronis 2018 Home

Thread needs solution

Can you do more than one backup using 2018.  For instance I want to backup just my data once a week.

I also want to do a full backup as a seperate full backup to a different disk one time and from time to time replace it.  The reason is I want to put my full on a partition rather than seperate disk and it is too big.

Yes - one of the nice things about ATI is that it can support multiple backups of the same drive, including incremental images if needed. I've done this on my machine with image backups and File and Folder backups running on different schedules.

Definitely possible. On one of my systems I have 5 backup tasks; weekly and daily to Acronis Cloud and my NAS, and a daily backup to local dive. You need to make sure you give the tasks different names, and it is best to have a separate directory for each task to save its backups.

Thanks for info.

One final question. in 2018 where you select activity it list each backup.  How do I delete one or more of them.  I basically only want to keep 2 or 3 of each to avoid running out of space on the disk.

You can set a clean-up rule for each task; after a back-up set (full + incremental ones) is completed, and the full for the next set is completed, the old set can be deleted. You can also select to retain the first full backup. You can specify the number of sets to be kept. Hope this helps.

You can also manually delete, but you then need to validate the backup (click on ignore for the missing backups). In such case the first backup must be a full backup and if for any set you keep incremental, you need all of the one up to the one you delete - otherwise they will not work).

My experience has been that I am not able to do more than "one" full backup of my disk. If I start another backup it is completed and validated and the earlier one seem to not be available even though I am still able to see it on the external hard drive that stores them. If I am doing something wrong in my setup please tell me what. If I am not able to keep several full backups on the same disk then this product is no longer working as before and I will have to seek a replacement.

exgovie, sorry but we will need more specific details of how your backup task(s) are configured and named to understand why you are not able to do more than only one full backup?

Screen shots are always helpful in the above regard.

I am certainly able to keep multiple full backups on the same backup disk with no issues at all, so this may simply be a matter of understanding how these backups are shown to you?

See the screen shots below from one of my backups which stores 3 Full backup versions before then deleting the oldest one (after the next full backup has been created).

The screen shots show:  The files on my backup drive, then the Activity view of the same, then finally the Recovery view of these files, as shown by the dates/times but where the Recovery times show as the time when the backup was started but the others show when it completed!

OK I have used Acronis earlier versions with no problems until Windows forced a new windows10 upgrade that gave me problems with a number of products including Acronis 2013. I upgraded to Acronis 2018 and now I seem to Have problems doing what I use to do. I frustration I uninstalled Acronis and then reinstalled it and I also cleaned out my external Drive F. I ran a completely new backup which seemed to be normal but when I try to access this valid backup I get a window say can not find Volume V1 which is part of the label of the backup file which I can not understand because I thought I was running full backup only. since I have this problem it must be related to not being able to get multiple backup files since I can not even do one now. Here is the settings for my options when backup was done. I open a new folder on the external F drive with the date thus F:/myw10backups/6_3_2018 for the file name but it adds the V1 to file name. I think if I fix this problem my multiple backup files will be solved too.

Now I notice if I open the recovery tab I can not see the external F drive. Now I am totally confused how the product works. Thak you for taking the time to help a totally lost beginner.

Had some problems here with screen print I use paintshop pro and left file as a psp file which you can not see. Redid it above as jpg files hope this is done right.

Ok, see the 2 screen images now OK.

First comment, it looks like you are changing the Destination folder as you are making your new backups, i.e. you wrote: " I open a new folder on the external F drive with the date thus F:/myw10backups/6_3_2018 "

My question here is simply why?  There should be no reason to do this as it will only complicate things.  If you are only making full backups, then let ATI handle the naming of these backup image files based on your chosen task name of COMPUTER_ROOM.

Acronis will always add on the extra strings to show the type of backup, sequence, version etc to make the complete backup name.  See my earlier screen shot from Windows Explorer where my full backups are now up to _b37_s1_v1 but also showing the previous _b36 and _b35 backup files in the same folder.

Second comment is that you are not looking at the Recovery page information correctly, this will never show your F: drive here because was not included in the backup image - only the Source data is shown on the Recovery page, hence it shows your C: partition and a Diags partition for this.

The old adage of keeping things simple really do apply here.  Choose one Destination folder and stick with using this for one backup task.  ATI will handle the rest though unless you have unlimited space on your destination drive, you should turn on Automatic Cleanup, and tell ATI how many backup files you want to store before deleting the oldest ones.  I use 'Store no more than X recent backup versions' where my drive can hold at least X+1 full backup files.
