PS4 HDD clone

Thread needs solution

Hello,

i din't try it and before i start to spend much time on trying, i would like to ask if i's possible to clone a PS4 HDD. I would like to replace the build in HDD (1TB, 5400rpm, 8MB cache) with an faster one (1TB, 7200rpm, 128MB cache).

Regards

Frank, you should be able to use Acronis True Image to clone your PS4 HDD but to do so you would need to remove the current drive and then attach this to a Windows computer along with the replacement drive you want to clone to.

I would strongly recommend using ATI to make a full disk backup to another backup drive before attempting the clone operation.  You could also use this full disk backup to restore to the new HDD instead of using cloning.

From my limited searches, the PS4 supports only FAT32 or exFAT filesystems which have some limitations as documented in the ATI 2019 User Guide: Supported file systems

Thank you so much Steve. I will try it when i find some time this week. I will let you know if it works.

Best regards

Frank

Here`s an update. It doesn`t work, because the new HDD is 126,3MB smaller than the old one. So i have to do it the regular way with save and restore with the PS4 tool which tooks along 3-4 hours for backup and the same time for restore. Cloning or backup and restore would have been done in half of the time.

Regards

Frank, I would say that this falls into the limitations mentioned from the user guide where it says for:

  • FAT16/32/exFAT * **

* File systems are supported only for disk or partition backup/recovery operations.

** File systems are supported only for disk or partition recovery operations (without resizing).

The brackets at the end are in play when your new drive is smaller than the original one, as resizing would be needed but is not supported for these file systems.

The good news here is that you have been able to do the migration using the PS4 tool, albeit more slowly than anticipated.

Yes Steve, i have read the supported file systems. PS4 filesystem is none of them. But Aconis do the backup to an external drive, i made it sector by sector. The new drive is a Seagate Barracuda Pro ST1000LM049 with 1 TB, but they stole some bytes from it, so the file size is a little smaler than the built in of the PS4. I think i would have worked, if the new drive would have been large enough.

(Please excuse my english).

Thank you very much for your help!
