Recovery freezes

Thread needs solution

Hello,

Currently having an issue trying to clone a 1 TB hard drive to a 1 TB hard drive in the exact same type of desktop (Dell OptiPlex 7050). We're using Acronis 2018 and the WinRE version to successfully clone a Windows 10 OS drive drive and all partitions, or at least it seems successful. When we go to recover the drive on to the clone target, Acronis lets us select the backup file, confirms the partitions we want to restore (all of them) and lets us start the process.

Then it immediately stops making progress, and won't let us cancel. We've let it run for a whole day, and it shows no progress at all. We've also tried about 4 times to make a new clone from the system, and even tried a different system of the same type, but they all end up freezing the same.

Could really use some help, this product is not performing as advertised.

Adam, welcome to these public User Forums.

There is some confusion of terms in this topic regarding clone, backup and recovery!

Please see the link in my signature that explains the differences between backup and clone.

The recommended process for migrating an installed Windows 10 OS from one HDD to a second HDD would be as follows:

Assuming you are using the Acronis 2018 WinRE 'Simple' version of the rescue media created on the same PC where it is being used.

  1. Boot from the Rescue Media using the same BIOS mode as is used by Windows 10 - this is very important to avoid any partition scheme migration from MBR to GPT or reverse.

  2. Create a full disk backup of the original source Windows 10 1TB HDD to an external USB backup drive.

  3. Shutdown the PC, remove the installed 1TB HDD and replace by the new HDD.

  4. Boot from the Rescue Media again using the correct BIOS mode.

  5. Recover the disk image created in step 2. to the new 1TB HDD.

  6. Shutdown the PC, remove the rescue media & disconnect the backup USB drive.

  7. Power on the PC and confirm that Windows 10 runs from the recovered new HDD.
