Rescue disk not finding back up
I recently started to use Acronis 2018. I back up the full disc to an external drive. I set up two folders in the drive and alternate their usage to ensure that i always have a back up in the event of failure of the system.
I can see the backups, folders and files if I access them the Acronis software on the PC.
However when I try to see if the rescue disk (bootable media) works I have a problem. Acronis loads from the disc, asks me what I want to do, recover files or whole disc but when I tell it do do something it asks where the files are kept. I indicate the hard disc but it does not find the folders. It then states the external drive needs to be formatted to work.
Any ideas what I am doing wrong.

The drive is GPT with the format NTFS

If you are using Linux based Rescue Media I would suggest creating a WinPE or WinRE based version instead.

I don't understand the comment. The rescue disc was created by Acronis and is burnt on to a DVD.I have never used Linux.

Michael, how did you create your Rescue DVD?
If you created this on a Windows 8.1 or 10 computer with ATI 2018 installed and using the Simple method, then this should be using the Windows 10 Recovery Environment which is very similar to WinPE but customised to your computer.
If you downloaded the Rescue Media ISO file from your Acronis account and then burnt this to DVD, then this uses a Linux OS distribution to boot into the Acronis application.
This is not about the OS that you use but rather the OS used on the rescue media.
See KB 60091: Acronis True Image 2018: how Simple bootable media creation mode works which has a lot more information on this subject of rescue media.

I created the rescue disk on my windows 10 pc using the simple method. The disc works in that it boots up Acronis and asks what I want to do. The problem is that it does not find the files which are on an external drive. It wants to reformat that drive.
When I open Acronis within Windows it recognises the drive and the files.

Michael, it sounds like we are back full circle here with where you started off from!
If your external drive is formatted as GPT with NTFS, then there should be no reason why the 'Simple' Rescue Media cannot see the drive correctly?
My only other thought at this point (apart from suggesting opening a Support Case with Acronis) is to verify that when booting the Rescue Media, that you are doing so from a fully shutdown / restarted system, and are not in a hybrid sleep / hibernated state? Just doing a Restart from within Windows with the Rescue Media connected should assure this, else holding the Shift key when clicking on Shutdown.
Does the Rescue Media see any of your other external drives correctly if you have any?

Can you post a screenshot of Windows Disk Management with the external drive attached so that we can know more about that drive?

The first screen shot shows the screen when i go to Acronis via Windows. It shows the external drives and the back ups. The main screen ashows that the files/folders are there.
The second screen shot is the screen from drive manager with the properties of the j drive shown.
The third screen shot shows the screen when I use the Acronis recovery disc. It sees the j drive but does not see the back ups and asks to format the drive.
Hope this helps.

The Acronis recovery disc view was following a complete shut down and then start up.

Michael, thanks for the screen shots. Next question: how is this drive being connected to your computer here? The third image shows drive J: as a 'local disk'.

Michael,
Your screenshots explain the issue. It is actually not an issue but application behavior that confuses a user unfamiliar with working with boot media.
Boot/rescue media can and will show different drive letters than that of Windows for installed/connected storage devices. In your case what you see as drive letter J: in Windows is I believe actually drive letter F: or possibly E: in the rescue media. If you look at the Volume Name you will see that the disk is labeled Elements. I see that you have 2 drives with Volume labels of Elements. You should change this so that the Volume labels are different for each drive. This is recommended as it is easier to select the correct drive if you look for Volume labels rather than drive letters because of the changes in letters that occur when using the rescue media.
I think if you select the drives labeled Elements that you will find your backups.

O.K. I will check that out and get back to you.

You are right. The rescue puts different letters against the drives to windows. When I clicked on the other drives I found the back ups.
Thanks for all your help, appreciated.
