[SOLVED] TI2018+WinPE finds Hynix eMMC and backs up....sort of

Thread needs solution

If the Acer Switch 10 is a sign of things to come with Secure Boot then God help us all. It has no legacy/CSM modes making it impossible to boot a Linux based Acronis bootable USB. However a little digging and following some useful Acronis tutorials has me dual-booting a TI 2018 WinPE alongside Windows 10.

So I finally have the Acronis WinPE GUI with no network (can't win them all) and turn enthusiastically to backing up the Hynix 50GB eMMC housed within. Acronis 2018 seems to recognise the drive and a backup is created via a USB hub to another connected USB to SATA HDD.

However, upon later inspection of the resulting image, the C system partition is available but empty? Other partitions have files within like recovery et al, but no significant system directories or user profile data to view in C.

Has this been experienced by anybody else? Granted eMMC type drives (other than their SD cousins) are a new concept to me as far as imaging is concerned, but I've done enough normal HDD/SSD imaging over the years to know there is something fishy with this drive type and Acronis claiming to support it.

Look forward to borrowing your brains. :)

Richard, more questions than answers here.

Which method of creating the Acronis WinPE Rescue Media have you used here?  Was this using the ATI Rescue Media Builder incorporated in the main ATI GUI, or have you used the MVP Custom ATIPE builder script?

When you created the WinPE Rescue media, did you add any drivers to support the Hynix 50GB eMMC drive (assuming that such drivers are available to use)?

When looking at the contents of the backup .tib file, have you got the Windows Explorer option to show hidden/system files enabled in the view settings?

What mode is the Hynix 50GB eMMC drive working in - is this shown as a RAID device?

Hi Steve

Thanks for looking in.

Q1: Which method of creating the Acronis WinPE Rescue Media have you used here?  Was this using the ATI Rescue Media Builder incorporated in the main ATI GUI, or have you used the MVP Custom ATIPE builder script?

A: The inbuilt media builder which asks for Windows ADK during the process

Q2: When you created the WinPE Rescue media, did you add any drivers to support the Hynix 50GB eMMC drive (assuming that such drivers are available to use)?

A:I did see that prompt during media creation but I left it blank. In fact I did think about this afterwards but when Acronis identified a drive to backup I thought everything was ok. Even if I had to populate the extra drivers I wouldn't even know where to get drivers for the eMMC

Q3: When looking at the contents of the backup .tib file, have you got the Windows Explorer option to show hidden/system files enabled in the view settings?

A: I haven't tried this and will give it a look

Q4: What mode is the Hynix 50GB eMMC drive working in - is this shown as a RAID device?

No just a single storage device in a uber budget netbook

Richard

I think I found the issue which I wouldn't have thought Windows 10 would do without my consent. It turns out C drive is Bitlocker Encrypted which seems to enable itself even on a clean Windows 10 media reinstall.
Obviously WinPE being an unknown quantity, the drive contents remain encrypted within the backup. I bet this is the answer but I will decrypt C drive and try another WinPE backup.

Richard, glad you found the answer to this issue, thanks for the feedback.
