ATI2016 cannot select new SSD as target for cloning

Thread needs solution

Hi !
(I thought, this would be a piece of cake)

I want to replace the current HDD with a SSD (Win 10) to speed it up

  1. I connected the new SSD to a USB port using a SATA - USB Adapter.
  2. Disk Management : I initialized the SSD with GPT
    This is Disk 3 (0 = internal HDD, 1=external USDB D:\, 2=external USB E:\, 3 = new SSD)
  3. ATI 2016 : Tools -> Clone Disk
  4. After some time, I select the souce : Disk 1
  5. In the step where I shall select the destination
    1. Disk 1 greyed out : OK
    2. Disk 2 selectable (external USB) : OK
    3. Disk 3 selectable (external USB) : OK
    4. Disk 4 SSD : I cannot select it as destination

I went again through Disk Management and formatted a Simple Partition without given it a letter.
Same with Clone Disk Wizard

What do I do wrong ?

Alexandre, welcome to these public User Forums.

What are the sizes of the source and target drives here?  i.e. Disk 1 and 4?

How much used / free space is available on Disk 1?

What type of PC is involved here?  Is it a Desktop / Tower PC or a Laptop / Notebook PC?

What type of SSD are you cloning to?  Is it a SATA SSD or a NVMe M.2 PCIe card type SSD?

Have you performed a CHKDSK and Defrag of the source HDD Disk 1?

Have you made a full disk backup of Disk 1 in case of any mistakes, errors, issues etc?
This is strongly recommended as a safety net in case cloning goes wrong!

Please see KB 56634: Acronis True Image: how to clone a disk - and review the step by step guide given there.

Note: the first section of the above KB document directs laptop users to KB 2931: How to clone a laptop hard drive - and has the following paragraph:

It is recommended to put the new drive in the laptop first, and connect the old drive via USB. Otherwise you will may not be able to boot from the new cloned drive, as Acronis True Image will apply a bootability fix to the new disk and adjust the boot settings of the target drive to boot from USB. If the new disk is inside the laptop, the boot settings will be automatically adjusted to boot from internal disk. As such, hard disk bays cannot be used for target disks. For example, if you have a target hard disk (i.e. the new disk to which you clone, and from which you intend to boot the machine) in a bay, and not physically inside the laptop, the target hard disk will be unbootable after the cloning.
