Changing computer

I apologize in advance for possible english mistakes and want to specify that I don't know much about disk mirroring. I do want to mirror the disk of a computer I have in order to have a backup plan in case it breaks. If my pc, which is pretty old, should break, can I transfer my Acronis True Image 2019 license on a new computer or should I buy a new one? Could I activate a temporary license to mirror the data from the old pc and then install the Acronis True Image 2019 on the new computer?

Thank you.

Simone, welcome to these public User Forums.

Acronis does not use the term 'disk mirroring' and this would normally (in my experience) refer to a type of RAID protection where you have multiple different drives which look to be a single drive to the Windows OS.

Please see the links in my signature which will help you understand the terms used by Acronis, i.e. the difference between Backup and Cloning, which are the two main ways of making a backup of your disk drive.

There are a number of considerations when thinking about moving from an old computer to a new one.

The easiest way of migrating is to just move your user data (documents, music, photos etc) from the old to the new computer.  You can do this by having a backup of the data and restoring this to the new computer.

It is also possible to try to migrate the whole Windows OS and all applications & data from the old computer to a new one, but this is a much more complex task and not guaranteed to be successful as there are many key factors that are involved.

With regards to migrating your ATI 2019 license and software, there is no issue as this is anticipated that users may need to do this.  You would simply install ATI 2019 on the new computer and activate the software using your license key, then follow the prompts given to move the activation from your old computer to the new one.

Note: you should already have made backups of your data from the old computer and have this stored on an external USB backup drive, then just need to restore this data to the new computer when needed.

Simone,

Once you register your Acronis license to your account, it is always available to download the software and/or the license key from there.  You are able to move your license to any machine you want, so long as it is only actively being used on the same number of computers you're licensed for.  So, if you have one license, and your old computer can't start (or you just want to transfer it to a new computer), this is completely possible.

Secondly, make sure you have "rescue media" already built and that it boots and can detect your existing computers hard drive and any other drives that contain backup files.  If you need to restore a backup to a new computer (files/folders or even the entire Operating System), this can be done with rescue media.

Last... just because you can restore an older Operating System to a new computer, doesn't mean it's a good idea.  For instance, if you have an older Operating System like Windows 7 and buy a new computer with Windows 10, don't plan on trying overwrite Windows 10 with Windows 7.  It's a bad idea because Windows 7 is end of life in a few months and won't have security updates or patches soon.  Also, OEM licenses (those that come with a pre-built computer) are not transferable to new hardware.  The only time you can get away with this, is with Windows 10, so long as both systems have the exact same version (Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Home..... or Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Pro), and if both machines have already registered a license with Microsoft at least once.

Long story short though... you can definitely reinstall Acronis 2019 on a new computer and license it.  You would just need to stop using it on the older computer.
