Cloning from Windows vs recovery USB Flash Drive

Thread solved

I have a Lenovo P1 Thinkpad with 2 2TB NVME SSDs in RAID 1 configuration. I'm trying to clone to a Seagate 2TSB Firecuda HDD through a Thunderbolt 3 port. If I clone using Windows, it appears to work ok, If I use the recovery USB Flash drive, the windows don't open correctly, and it hangs on the window for restarting, or shutting down when operation completes

First, why are you wishing to clone the NVMe RAID to a HDD? I rarely use cloning, particularly on a "production" system. I prefer to do a back and then do a recovery to the new drive. In order to isolate the cause of the problem, do you have the same issue if you restore to the HDD rather than cloning. Also, you should be using the recovery media in UEFI mode. As you can apparently access the NVMe RAID you are using Windows RE or Windows PE recovery media, eliminating another possible cause of problem.

Thank you Ian! I'm using Windows RE mode.

I'm under the impression that the FireCuda is a hybrid drive?  Acronis doesn't technically support cloning to hybrid drives as they are usually read as dynamic disks.  If it works in the end, cool, but just know that dynamic disks aren't supported for cloning. This may not be the case for single drives that present themselives as a basic disk to the OS, but just be aware.  Instead, you should use backup and recovery most likely.

Also, I agree with Ian, moving from an SSD to a hybrid drive seems odd.  I hate hybrid drives - they end up being very slow for just about everything else but booting.  The cache on them is usually so small that it runs out and then you're left with just a spinning drive (and a lot of them are only 5400RPM).

KB 56634: Acronis True Image: how to clone a disk

Source and target disks must have equal logical sector size. Cloning to a disk with different logical sector size is not supported. E.g., you can clone a 512 bytes/sector disk to 512 bytes/sector disk; you can clone a 4096 bytes/sector disk to 4096 bytes/sector disk; but you cannot clone a disk with logical sector size 512 bytes to disk with logical sector size 4096 bytes.

Only basic disks can be cloned with Acronis True Image. You cannot clone dynamic disks.

HideChecking if you have basic or dynamic disks

You can use Windows Disk Management to see if you have basic or dynamic disks:

  • Hit Start-Run and type in diskmgmt.msc
  • If it shows Basic, then you can do the cloning:
  • If it shows Dynamic, then cloning is not possible:

Thank you Bobbo_3C0X1  for all your information, and useful links! Yes, FireCuda is a hybrid drive.
