"Failed to read data from disk", yet Successful Backup

Thread needs solution

Whenever I do a Full Backup with ATI2019, I consistently get separate messages, "Failed to read data from disk", for four sectors.  Clicking "Retry" results in the same message, so I click "Ignore".  (See attached screenshots.)

ATI2019 Activity log shows, "Successfully backed up today at xx:xx AM".

CHKDSK reports no problems.

Each message goes on to say...
"Failed to read the snapshot.  See VSS logs for details.
(0x10C481) CRC error. (0x100155)"

How do I view the "VSS logs" and take action to resolve these errors

Jim, this error is always caused by a bad sector(s) issue on the drive being identified in the error message, so disk '1' in Acronis terms which is disk '0' as far as Windows Disk Management goes!

CHKDSK can only check disk partitions which have been allocated a drive letter, so will not tell you of any issues in other hidden/system partitions that are included in your Full Backup operation.

VSS is involved here because it is used to create a snapshot of data for the partitions being backed up, and uses free space within the same partition to store that snapshot in preparation for the data to be written out to your destination location.  The core issue here is that there are sector issues in the area of the partition / disk drive where the snapshot is being stored and then read from.

The way to narrow down where this issue lays is either to allocate drive letters to each hidden / system partition in turn, then run CHKDSK for those new drive letters; or else create separate backup tasks for each hidden/system partition and see which one gives the error message, or else use a full disk diagnostic tool to check the whole disk surface.

Dedicated diagnostic utilities from the disk manufacturers take the longest time to complete the checks, but provide the most accurate methods of checking whether the disk is good or needs replacement:
