Image Compression?

Thread needs solution

Hi

I have reinstalled windows and made a whole disc backup.

Why a 66GB used of a 250GB disc ends in 235GB image?
Do Acronis not have any kind of compression of the part of the disc empty?

Thankyou
Gus

Gus, welcome to these public User Forums.

What options did you select for your backup task when you created it?

The only time that a disk backup should give an archive file of the same size is when sector-by-sector mode is used, including unused sectors.  If ATI encounters bad sectors on a drive, then this can trigger the use of sector-by-sector mode too.

Check your backup settings, in particular on the Advanced page of the options for the task and ensure the options shown below are not selected.

If you have used the above mode, then you will need to delete the 253GB backup and make a new one.  I would recommend also doing a CHKDSK /F for the source disk too to ensure that there are no obvious disk issues at play here.

Thankyou @Steve

Will have to take a look at those options and try again.

Thankyou
Gus

Have checked and I don't have "sector-by-sector" selected.

Also have done a defrag and trien to do a new image.

Aborted when the image was by 192GB copied,

Any other thing to try ?

Thankyou
Gus

Gus, defrag is not the same as CHKDSK - you need to open the Tools tab for the disk drive then click on the option to check for errors.

To insert images, click on the image icon (sillouette of mountains with sun/moon above) then upload the image and select it to be inserted.

Please download the MVP Log Viewer tool (link in my signature below) and use this to review the log file for your backup operation. This should provide more information on why you are seeing the large image size?

Also done a CHKDSK.

I have made another image and the same, 238GB.

Also no clue on the MVP Log Viewer .

Gus, what exactly is your backup source selection here?  Your log shows it is backing up 7 partitions

What do you see if you double-click on the E:\MORELL_full_b1_s1_v1.tib file in Explorer?

It's a standard 1 week Windows 10 install. I havn't done any partition to disc C:, there must be the default partitions windows 10 do.

I have 3 discs on my system plaus a usb disc.

DISC 1 - Primary disc (windows 10)
DISC 2 - Hackintosh test disc running osx
DISC 3 - BACKUP DISC
DISC 4 . USB BACKUP DISC

I choose to backup the whole disc (no incremental backup). I wanted a fresh install backup disc.

Is acronis having any kind of problem with the "hackintos disc" ? With the clover boot option on disc C:?

I'm doing another test backup (incremental backup) to see what I get.

Will post in some minutes.

Thankyou
Gus

SOLVED.

If I open the backup file I see that I has also backing up my D: Drive, thats why the resulting image is so big.

Now I see that I can choose to backup disks and partitions.

Thankyou
Gus

Gus, glad that you have found the cause of this issue!
