.tia Archive Files Not Appearing in Acronis Drive

Thread needs solution

I initially created .tia archive files using True Image 2019 on Mac. I have since moved them to an external hard drive connected to a Windows 10 PC. These archives were detected by True Image and can be manually browsed by navigating to the .tia files in Windows Explorer. However they do not appear in Acronis drive and therefore the "View in Windows Explorer" link in True Image brings me to an empty folder.

Is this the expected result in this scenario? Is there any way I can have these archives appear in Acronis drive?

Thanks.

I don’t believe so.  The Mac and Windows versions are not supposed to be backwards compatible and am surprised that you could navigate the Mac created .tia in the Windows version of Acronis at all.

I have taken full disk images created by a Mac and been able to restore them with Windows recovery media (I backup my MacOS USB installers and have restored them to other USB drives with the Windows rescue media - Linux version) and that has worked.  However, I wouldn’t bank on this for any actual data though.

Acronis only “supports” Windows to Windows backup restore and Mac to Mac restore - and typically, only with the tool used to initially create the backup file (for instance, can’t restore a BU12.5 backup image with ATI 2019).  Even on a Mac, if using boot camp, you can only restore the boot camp partition with a full disk Mac restore.  Please seek the following KB articles.

Thanks for the reply. Just to provide some more details, when I navigate the .tia on Windows it appears to be using Windows Explorer - I double click the file and I'm presented with a password prompt. After entering the encryption password I see files as shown in the attached screenshot. Double clicking either of those brings me to the contents of the archive which I can navigate as if using Windows Explorer.

Would you suggest recreating the archives using the Windows version? I considered doing that when I moved everything over, but was hoping to save some time as the archives are quite large. Assuming I don't lose the ability to navigate the archives using Windows in the future I can certainly live with it as it stands since I don't really require access to the archives with any regularity.

Thanks again.

Ben, in this case, I’d recommend checking with Acronis. The fact that you can navigate them in File Explorer, suggests it should work.  However, when I check the user guides for

Mac:  https://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/ATIMAC2019/#37844.html

Win:  https://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/ATI2019/#38630.html

The Mac one says to use finder and the Windows one says to use File explorer.  However, neither specifically says the other is supported (or not).  In my experience though, the Mac side, typically should be used solely with the Mac side and the Windows side should be solely used with the Windows side.

So, yeah, if you have the space / time, you could try creating the archive from the Windows side again and see if it behaves better (which it probably will), but it would still be good to verify with Acronis if an archive is supposed to be cross-compatible with Mac/Windows regardless if it was made on the other type of OS that it is trying to be accessed from now.

Sound advice, thank you. I'll reach out to Acronis support and see what they say. I'll reply back here once I get a response just to close the loop.

Also, thanks for the link to the manuals, I'm not in the habit of checking those for software I'm using at home, so that's a good reminder to do that first next time.

Cheers,

Ben

Sounds good.  Looking forward to hearing their response too.  Thanks for taking the time to update, when you find out.

So I've accepted the fact that I'll have to recreate the archives if I want them to behave as they would if created with the Windows version. I'm not 100% sure support fully understood my question (they keep referring to .tib files when I'm asking about .tia files), but nonetheless the fact that the mac archives have corresponding metadata files is enough for me to accept that they're not really compatible. I've also just confirmed that the archive can't be navigated without the metadata file present I it seems logical that since the Windows version of True Image won't be looking for metadata files it wouldn't be able to open them properly. I'll be recreating these archives on Windows sometime soon.

Thanks again for your help,

 Ben

Thanks for the update!
