WinPE vs WinRE

Thread solved

Hi,

I can create anyone I want now, I've got 2 Windows images:

1 with missing Windows Recovery Environment that I can install ADK & WinPE so TrueImage will create WinPE

2 with Windows Recovery Environment so TrueImage will create WinRE

Where can I find a full list of differences between these 2? WinPE vs WinRE?

Thanks.

Winpe is more generic. It is designed with the basics for a preboot environment with only the default subset of drivers in the corresponding version of ADK. Windows 10 makes this a very robust baseline for applications to attach themselves too and winpe can be customized to add additional features such as bitlocker support, however, it's not there by default.

WinRE is based on your systems windows recovery environment. This is installed by default with each installation of Windows or each major upgrade of Windows 10. It also  includes the local system drivers, bitlocker support and wireless support. It is a bit more robust, but because it contains the drivers for the local system it was built on, it could potentially cause driver conflicts if used on other systems. With windows 10 though, that's not really an issue.

In most cases, use WinRE because it should already be installed and will give you some extra features. If WinRE is not working or is corrupted on your machine, then download and install Windows ADK. Both are great options, and the newer the version, the better the default driver support.

FYI, checkout the MVP rescue media builder. It supports both and adds even more functionality such as file explorers, internet browsers, zip support and a lot more.
