Acronis 2020 stopped running Incremental or Differential backups

Thread solved

Recently my Acronis 2020 stopped executing incremental, differential or any other sequential back scheme except a full backup. It simply runs a full backup, replacing the previous full backup. No matter what I do to try and reconfigure the option it still just runs a full backup. I tried deleting all defined backups, deleted all files and then recreated a new incremental scheme. Again, it just runs a full backup replacing anything else stored previously, even though the options says to do an incremental scheme.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Ironically, this started coincident with my support expiring on 12/31/20.

Jim, welcome to these public User Forums.

Which actual version of ATI 2020 do you have here?  Is it the Standard / perpetual version and not a subscription version?

I would recommend doing a Repair Install of ATI 2020 as per KB 60915: Acronis True Image: repairing program settings - to see if this will get you back to being able to do Incremental or Differential backups again.

Jim,

Anytime you change or attempt to change a task option setting that change will not be saved unless you actually run the task after you make the desired changes by clicking on the Back up now button in the task GUI.  Did you run the task to create a backup after you made your changes?

I have the standard perpetual license 2020.

I'll look at the  repair install procedure. Thanks.

Yes, I set options and ran many times. It doesn't matter what I change it always just runs a full backup.

Jim,

If a repair of the installation does not change the behavior then I recommend that you Remove the task from the GUI using the drop down menu for the tasks Delete option.  Select Remove to get rid of the task.  Next, at the bottom of the task column in the GUI look to the right of Add backup and you will see "v".  Click it and select Add existing backup.  In the Explorer type window that appears navigate to the location where your backup files for the deleted task are located.  Click to select the first task in the backup file list and then click the Add button at the bottom of the window.

You will be returned to the application GUI Backup screen.  Your task will be returned to the GUI and you will notice that the Back up now button has been changed to a Reconfigure button.  Click that button and you will either need to select the source data location again or possibly the backup destination location again.  In either case follow through with this wizard and once complete your task should be usable again.  I recommend that you have a good look at the options configuration to make certain that your settings for the task have been returned to their original settings.  If they have then click on Back up now to run the task.  The application will run the backup job and when completed your task should be back in sync again.

I just noticed something. I watched a backup execute while the options are set to Incremental. It did a long calculation of space needed and then started backing up predicting 52 minutes of time needed. But instead of backing up 144 gig as is the size of the existing backup file, it backed up a total of 2 Gig in only a few minutes. I clicked the Activity tab (which I've never really looked at) and I could see that it wrote an initial full backup of 134 Gig on 2/2, then 1.7 Gig on 2/3 and 2.1 Gig today, 2/4. In other words it is continually lengthening the SAME file with Incremental additions.

Is this the way it is supposed to work? I am accustomed to seeing the initial large file followed by a series of small files rather than just one file continually rewritten.

Anyone?

I can try that, but first I need an answer to my question immediately above this about the file behavior described.

Thanks.

Hi Jim,

Okay, yes the old way is no more as you discovered.  What happens with incremental backup now beginning with TI 2020 is that each incremental backup file created is incorporated into the same container file as the initial full backup file.  If you navigate to your backup location using Windows Explorer and double click on your backup file there it will open to show all the incremental files inside.

Another change here is that all files of a backup chain are dependent on each other.  If anyone file of the chain is lost or corrupted the entire chain is unusable.  Something to seriously consider.

The good news is that you did not have a problem after all.

Okay. Good to know. I never saw any announcement of that change.

Thanks to all for the answers.
