Acronis does not show internal drives as backup source

Thread needs solution

Last Friday the RAID5 failed on a friend's computer because two hard drives gave up the ghost at the same time. Since there was a current Acronis backup, this was not a problem. Four new disks were installed, the RAID5 created (Intel RST) and the image backed up. The computer started without any problems, everything was the same as before the crash.

Unfortunately, Acronis (TI 2020) could no longer backup.
The C: drive is missing from the list of backup sources.

What has been tried so far (with the latest program versions):

1. Uninstall + reinstall ATI2020
2. Uninstall ATI2020 + Install Trial Version 2021
3. Uninstall + Acronis Cleaning Tool + Install ATI2021
4. Disable all non-Microsoft services and autostarts

Nothing helped. Chkdsk C: is error-free. Drive Snapshot (trial version) shows all drives and partitions and can back up easily. Intel RST Driver is up to date (17.5.0.1017 ASRock Z370 Pro4).

I hope you still have good ideas on how to fix the backup. Offline backup with WinPE stick is not an option.

I hope that everything is understandable. My English is mediocre ;-)

Thanks very much!

Peter, have you tried reselecting the Source for your backup task, or creating a new backup task as there should be no reason for ATI 2020 or 2021 to not see your internal C: drive (RAID array) when running within Windows?

Hallo Steve,

many thanks for your response.

I have created a test job in both programs (2020 and 2021). The source selection (Drives and Volumes) was empty, only the external USB disk was displayed. For the sake of testing, I created another job with the selection "Entire Machine". The job started and aborted after a few seconds with the message "Source not found".

Peter, there is nothing shown in your earlier screen images that suggests any reason why Acronis cannot see the source partition!

One initial further thought is to ask you to try doing a full restart of Windows and see if that makes any real difference here?

Beyond that, then the next suggestion would be to try a different backup application such as the free version of Macrium Reflect 8 to see if that also has an issue with finding the C: drive?

Yours is the first forum topic that I ever remember seeing with such a problem!

See KB 63024: [Fixed] Acronis True Image: unable to select a disk for new backup, already configured backups fail, if volsnap is missing from UpperFilters in the system registry

What version of Windows are you running here?

The next option is to look at the logs and generate a disk report both of which can be done by using the latest version of the MVP Assistant tool (link in my signature).
Note: In the MVP tool, open the Settings, then Acronis Configuration page and download the extra tools shown.

Thank you Steve!

I can't get to the computer at the moment. I'll report as soon as I have new information.

Short update.
The computer is restarted daily. The update status is Windows 10 21H2 with the June update. The registry looks normal. Compared to another Acronis installation, there is an additional "mfedisk" driver in the UpperFilters on the affected PC.

Peter, from the disk report, Acronis is not seeing any C: disk / partition, only an empty 2TB RAID drive.

What does Windows disk management show for the same drive?

It´s the Partitionierung.png from the first Posting. Or do you need another screenshot?

Peter, sorry this is turning into a learning experience for me in trying to help you!

The Disk Report tool has shown me that it is probably too old to work with some of the modern drive technologies now in use!

I tested the same on my own system which has an NVMe M.2 main SSD along with a 2TB HDD in RAID mode, both of which were not shown correctly / did not show the actual partitions / volumes on those drives when using the Disk Report tool.  This is something that I had not recognised previously!

There is a new disk report tool which is integrated into the Acronis System Report tool which I have compared and which does show the correct / expected information.  To get to the new disk report tool, you would need to create an Acronis System Report zip file, then extra the disks.txt file from that zip file.

To show the differences, see the following from my own system.

Peter,

Can you capture screenshots of the application as I have displayed below?

At the bottom of the Backups column click on +Add backup which should produce a similar screen as this one.

image 804

Look to the right window pane and move your mouse to the area where you see Desktop-4QV28J9.  You should see the screen change and reveal Backup source.  Click on this area and from the next screen select Disks and partitions.  This should produce a screen as displayed below.

I have selected my drive C: as shown above.  Do you see your drive C: here as well?

If you do see it, select it as I have then complete the task configuration options to create a backup task of drive C:

Steve, thank you very much for your efforts! I'll deliver the new report tomorrow.

Here are the current logs and screenshots.

Peter,

Your latest log report shows that the filesystem on the 2.7 TB RAID array is corrupted.  It also shows your Windows install to be on your 3.6 TB USB disk which means your machine is booting from that disk.  It also shows that your machine is using drive letters J: M: P: and Z:

Disk 2 (your USB disk) has 2 partition, partition one contains Partition contains your Windows installation.

You say that you restored the Windows image from a backup.  The report posted suggests that this restore was applied to the USB disk rather than the raid 5 array which is what I think you were trying to do.

The question is, why is the raid array filesystem corrupt?  Did you use the Intel raid utility that is accessed prior to boot to create the new raid array?  If not then that is probably the reason it is corrupted.

My suggestion would be to start over again, recreate the raid array using the Intel raid utility (Ctrl+I) to start the raid configuration utility and complete the configuration.  Once this is complete you can then see the raid disk when you perform the recovery of the backup and select it as the target.

Thanks Steve!

I can assure you that the PC will not boot from the USB disk. The external disk can be easily ejected in Windows.
I would generate the report again with the USB disk removed. Because of the corrupt RAID, I'm checking the Intel RST GUI to see if there's a way to fix it.

Here is the Disk Report without the external USB hard drive. Everything is optimal and error-free in the Intel Windows RAID management program.
However, I forgot to initialize the RAID. I've made up for that now. But it takes about 36 hours.

Peter, the new disk report is still showing the RAID drive as being corrupt so I guess you will have to wait till all the RAID actions are complete then check again.

Are you sure the PC will not boot from the USB disk?  If you detach the USB disk from the PC and then start it does t boot?

New week, same problem...

After RAID initialization, C: was still not showing up as a source. I uninstalled Acronis and installed the trial version of Macrium Reflect. All partitions are visible. The first data backup is currently running.

We have decided not to investigate the Acronis issue any further. We need a working backup and we can't do that with Acronis.

Thank you for your efforts!

I have the same problem.  After successfully restoring a disk image, Acronis no longer sees my internal C: hard drive, the same disk that was restored.  It only sees external drives.  So I can no longer make full disk backups of my C: drive.

Specifically, I needed to revert to an older backup to restore my hard drive to a previous state.  I restored the backup onto the same drive.

I've tried creating a new backup, and also adding an existing backup.  Neither option sees my internal drive.  Typically it says I need to "Reconfigure", and then it can't find the original internal drive.

Since the last post over 1.5 years ago, has there been any resolution to this issue?

I'm using Acronis 2021 on Windows 10, with a striped RAID of three SSDs.

Thank you!

Hello Kevin,

Since you mentioned using a striped RAID of three SSDs, ensure that the RAID configuration is stable and properly recognized by both the operating system and Acronis.

Try removing the existing backup settings and reconfiguring them. Create a new backup plan for your C: drive.

Check the disk management:

  1. Open Windows Disk Management (you can search for "Disk Management" in the Start menu).
  2. Check if your internal C: drive is recognized there.
  3. If it appears, ensure that it has a drive letter assigned.

You could also try fixing the installation file of our agent by downloading it and repairing the installation.

Best regards.
