Acronis True Image for Crucial - Cloned Drive doesn't boot / Turns into "BIOS loop"?

Thread solved

Hello everyone,

I purchased a new SSD and followed Crucial's instructions for cloning my current boot drive onto the new one.

However selecting the drive in my motherboard BIOS just refreshes the screen for a second and puts me back into the boot device selection screen. I can provide a video if requested but I'm not allowed to place hyperlinks.

I googled a bit but couldn't find any threads with this problem (maybe I used the wrong terms?), but if this is a common problem, I apologise.

PC Specs in case they matter:
MoBo: MSI Z370 SLI Plus
CPU: Intel i7-8700k
RAM: 16GB DDR4-3000
GPU: GTX 1070
Old Drive: Crucial BX500
New Drive: Crucial P.2 1000GB
OS: Windows 10 64-bit Version 19043.1826

Edit: I tried one more restart, and now my PC won't boot past a black screen (on the old drive, that is). The new drive doesn't get past the rotating circle animation.

Florentin, welcome to these public User Forums.

Please see forum topic: [IMPORTANT] CLONING - How NOT to do this - which was written after dealing with many cloning issues in the forums.

The instructions provided by Crucial & other OEM providers of Acronis programs are over simplistic and rely on very basic systems to work successfully.

Please see KB 56634: Acronis True Image: how to clone a disk - and review the step by step guide given there.

Note: the first section of the above KB document directs laptop users to KB 2931: How to clone a laptop hard drive - and has the following paragraph:

It is recommended to put the new drive in the laptop first, and connect the old drive via USB. Otherwise you will may not be able to boot from the new cloned drive, as Acronis True Image will apply a bootability fix to the new disk and adjust the boot settings of the target drive to boot from USB. If the new disk is inside the laptop, the boot settings will be automatically adjusted to boot from internal disk. As such, hard disk bays cannot be used for target disks. For example, if you have a target hard disk (i.e. the new disk to which you clone, and from which you intend to boot the machine) in a bay, and not physically inside the laptop, the target hard disk will be unbootable after the cloning.
