ATI 2020 install doesn't remove previous version

Thread solved

When I first installed 2020 the install routine told me the previous version of ATI (2014) had to be uninstalled first. I can't remember if the 2020 installer took care of that or if I did. Today I noticed a folder on my D: partition named TrueImage and within it another folder named TrueImageHome containing about 40 files (dll & exe.) This is where I had installed 2014.

So either the 2020 installer didn't remove it, or my uninstaller (Revo Uninstaller) didn't. To see if anything in that folder was needed by 2020 I renamed it to TrueImage.DEL and rebooted. No issues with 2020 launching, so I felt good about simply deleting the folder using my file manager. Except it won't delete stating that "the folder or a file in it it open in another program." Of course it doesn't state which file is in use.

Using my task/processor manager I see a number of Acronis processes running but they're all pointing to C:\Program Files (x86) which is where 2020 lives.

Can anyone give me a clue as to how to find what file is open from the old installation? And/or how to delete the entire old folder?

I should add that using LockHunter on the TrueImageHome folder shows that "no processes locking this file or folder have been found."

Thanks.

Fred, none of the ATI installers will uninstall any previous versions, this has to be done by the user if this is not a direct upgrade (where ATI replaces the files in its folders by new ones).

ATI also doesn't allow users to pick any locations but the default C:\Program Files (x86)\ location for installing, so if you have a TrueImage folder on your D: drive, then this wasn't created by an ATI installation.

What may be at work here is Acronis Active Protection which may recognise files in the D: drive folder and be preventing them from being deleted (as it would to stop malware etc), so you may need to turn off AAP then retry removing the folder and contents.

Thanks Steve. I don't know what else would/could have created that folder. I'm pretty sure that when I installed 2014 I was given the option to choose a partition\folder for installation and that's how I wound up with D. I try never to install applications to my boot drive. 2020 gave me no choice.

Never the less, AAP is off and has been off for quite some time.

I'm thinking a boot into Safe Mode may be the only option to remove it unless you ro someone else has another suggestion. I will copy it to a flash drive first, just in case. Although I can't really see that anything on it is being used by 2020.

The other approach here is to open the problem folder and start trying to delete individual files until you hit any that you cannot delete.  At that point, look in Windows Task Manager for any active processes or Services with the names of the files that cannot be deleted?  If found, end the process or stop the service, then retry the delete.

Again - thanks. The 'problem' file is in the x64 directory under TrueImageHome. It is versions_page.dll and task manager shows it as being used by explorer.exe. I killed explorer, deleted the dil, and all is now well.

That's good to hear Fred, thanks for the update.
