Backup source changed to larger cloned disk, but is doing full backup, not incremental

Thread needs solution

I had a backup set up and working well for a 2TB disk. It has 1.6TB of data on it. After running the initial bckup, when I ran a backup, it would just do an incremental backup that didn't take very long as I didn't change things on it often.

I just cloned the disk to a 8TB drive as the other one was getting old. That went well. I assigned it the same drive letter as the former 2TB drive. I started the backup, changed the source to the new 8TB drive, but it started doing a full backup rather than an incremental backup as expected. Why? Doesn't it recognize the new disk as having all the data as the old disk and thus just does a small incremental backup? Is this normal? If it's normal, do I then go an delete the old backup files? Thanks for you help.

Seder, welcome to these public User Forums.

I believe that this is normal for the situation you have described in changing the physical source disk drive and the associated Source device selection for your backup task.

Acronis do not just work with the drive letter for the drive, but with the Disk & Partition unique identifiers of the drive, therefore these will be different to those it knew from your original source drive and Acronis will know that this is a different drive, hence will do a full backup of this new drive.

Assuming that you have sufficient space on your destination backup location, then there is no need to delete the old backup files from the previous drive until you no longer need them.  Automatic cleanup should still run for this task to manage those backups for you, if you have it set.
