Build 38530 - Update 4 - thoughts?

Thread needs solution

Just noticed there's a "new" Build 38530 - update 4 for ATI 2020.

Anyone have any thoughts either way on this?

I might leave well alone if people are having issues with it.

TIA

Dave, the new build looks to just fix some vulnerabilities in the application as documented in the release notes for the new build.  It shouldn't be causing any new issues but by all means hold off on installing it if you have any concerns and see if other users post reports of problems?

Thanks Steve.

I've had severe problems with updating to build 38530.

When I tried to update my desktop to this build, it downloaded, then started the install, but stopped progressing at about 15%. I tried cancelling the update, but nothing happened, so I rebooted. When I tried to open Acronis True Image, it failed to open and gave me an error message about some dll missing. I tried reinstalling the previous version, build 25700, but it would not reinstall. To make a long story short, I tried a few things, then went into safe mode, and deleted everything that had "Acronis" or "TrueImage" in the name, and then I ran the Acronis Cleanup Tool again. (it failed the first time) This time it worked, and after rebooting, I was able to reinstall build 25700, which has never given me any problems. I tried the same update on my laptop computer, but this time I ran a full backup of my C drive first. Sure enough the update failed on the laptop just as it had on my desktop.  But now I just restored the backup I had created, and was right back to build 25700.

As a result of this experience, I've turned off the option to check for new versions on startup. I'll just stick with the current version, and skip 38530 altogether.

Just for balance here, I have ATI 2020 installed in a Windows 10 virtual machine (on VMware) which was still on build #25700 and that I have just upgraded without any problem to #35860.

The upgrade itself fairly slow which may cause some users to think it was hung but did complete successfully.

The Win 10 VM is currently installing some Windows updates so will probably want a restart before I run an incremental backup using the new build of ATI 2020.

Steve, thanks for the info. I left mine sitting there for at least an hour, and it never progressed past about 15%.  I have a Ryzen 5 3600 with 32 GB ram, so I doubt it was actually running all that time. But I'm glad to hear that my experience is not the same for everybody else.

Alan, welcome to these public User Forums.

There seems to be a common thread with some of the AMD processor systems for some users though this has seemed to be focussed on rescue media.  I only have Intel PC's and haven't seen any real issues.  I ran a full backup with #38530 which completed successfully, so again strange that some users are seeing issues with that build..!

It could be associated with AMD CPU/Chipset. I wounder if it makes any difference if you one:

  1. install the update when prompted; or
  2. download the full installation media (they no longer seem to have the web installation media) then run the update (using Run as Administrator).

Another possibility that there is a permissions issue that makes the installation go pear-shaped - for some reason does not have elevated permissions. Just wild speculation on my part.

There's a different thread where some True Image 2021 users have had build updates stop at 10% that sounded very similar to what I experienced, and there was a fix posted for getting past that. I suspect that might also work for my 2020 version. If I really needed to update to build 38530 I would try that procedure, but I'm perfectly happy with build 25700, so I'll just stay with that build for now. Whenever the next build after 38530 comes out, I'll give that a try.

Alan, it is highly unlikely that there will be a further build of ATI 2020 (as it is now 6 months out of support). It is possible that a new build will be issued if there is a problem with the installation routine causing the issue being discussed here.

Ian

Agree with Ian, highly unlikely to see any further new builds for ATI 2020 unless Acronis identify further critical vulnerabilities with their new focus on Cyber Protection in ATI 2021..!

I had Build 38530 update install a few days ago, now I cannot view any files in a backup. Have tried a repair with no success.

Where do I get my previous build from, I'm guessing it was build 25700 as that is the version on my other machine. Thanks.

George, if you have registered ATI 2020 to your Acronis Account then you can normally download one or more previous build versions from the account download page by clicking on the carat at the right end of the selection box.

Notes: to install an older build will require that you fully remove the later one first.
I would recommend using the Settings page option to export your backup task configuration to a zip file before uninstalling, to allow you to import it back again later.
Build 38530 shouldn't cause any issues with viewing your backup files / contents, so if you are willing to do so, try doing a clean, full install of 38530 after uninstalling then running the Acronis Cleanup tool (link below), to see if this brings the full function back before installing the older build.

Many thanks for the detailed explanation Steve. I got ahead of you in the interim and discovered the link.

I did uninstall ATI with Revo Uninstaller and reinstall 38530, it didn't resolve the issue. Reinstalled 25700 and all is good.

Thanks again.
