Clone Disk issue

Thread needs solution

Trying to clone a larger disk (HDD 1.5 TB) to a small disk (SSD 1TB).  I've done these in the past with no issue.

Source disk usage is sitting at 893GB and the available space on the target shows as 931GB.  Error indicates I need '465.7 GB of free disk space available on the target hard drive to complete the operation with the current filter.'

This suggests Acronis is trying to clone the entire source drive, not just the data.  Any suggestions?

Richard, welcome to these public User Forums.

In all honesty your target 1TB disk (with 931GB available space) is not large enough to hold the contents (893GB data) from your 1.5TB HDD drive, and if you do clone this then the SSD will really struggle.

The recommendation for any SSD is to have around 20% available free space in order to achieve best performance.  Your SSD would only have 38GB or around 4% free space.

If ATI is trying to clone the whole 1.5TB source drive then this is because it has encountered some file system issues such as bad sectors which would cause it to switch to using sector-by-sector mode.  You should run CHKDSK /F for all the partitions on that drive, or else use the diagnostic tools provided by the drive maker to check the whole drive for errors.

I would also suggest that if your 1.5TB is an HDD (presuming it is), that you clean up unused and temporary files on it then, defragment and optimize the disk followed by performing a chkdsk /r on it prior to attempting to transfer the data on the drive to the new one.  You might find that disk space may be sufficient afterwards although not overly abundant.
