Install second operating system?

Thread needs solution

Good morning,

my Win10 64bit system exhibits some strange behaviour and I would like to set it up completely fresh. However, in order not to loose the current setup for the time I am building the new system, I envisage to make a test installation on an external hard disk. When everything is working fine there, I would then remove the current system from the internal drive and copy the installation from the external drive there.

Is this possible with Acronis and if so, how would I proceed?

Many thanks in advance

AQ

AQ, sorry but Microsoft do not allow Windows to be installed / booted from from an external drive unless you jump through a lot of hoops, and then I doubt that it would be easy to move such an installation to be an internal drive later.

I would recommend an alternative approach, i.e. first make a full disk backup of your current working Windows 10 disk drive and store this on a spare external drive.

Next, obtain a spare disk drive (HDD or SSD) of a similar or larger size than the current OS drive, then remove the original drive and replace this by the new / spare drive.

Do a clean install of Windows 10 to the new internal drive and set this up as you want it to be with the knowledge that your original drive is safely in a cupboard away from any possibility of being corrupted, over written etc.

If all is Ok with the new drive, then you could attach the original drive via USB and copy any user data across from it to the new OS installation.

Note: if you really do want to get Windows to boot from an external drive, then see webpage: How to Run Windows 10 From a USB Drive - and read the section describing how to do this by using the Rufus tool.  This does work - I used Rufus to create a working Windows 10 64-bit OS on a 128GB Samsung USB 3.1 pen drive.

Steve,

thanks a lot for your advice. I have, of course, a full Acronis backup of my current system. However, I wanted the system to continue running, while  in parallel I want to take my time with the new installation. Maybe a dual-boot option might work. I will have to look into that.

Sorry for the duplicate topic, but I thought the first was somehow lost since I did not see the thread in the forum.

AQ, the delays in seeing new topics are due to Acronis moderating all posts from new users, which in turn has become necessary because of deliberate attempts by hackers / spammers to flood the forums with hundreds or thousands of automated new posts, which then render the forums unusable for everyone!  Moderation typically is performed only on working days so users will see delays if posting at a weekend.
