migrate backup to new computer running Windows 10 from a Windows 7 computer

Thread needs solution

I just purchased a new windows 10 computer and I am going to want to move my data from my old computer to the new one, but I am running windows 7 now. I am using Acronis 2020 and am backing up to an external hard drive. Thanks for any help with this

Sumotori, welcome to these public User Forums.

Please install a copy of ATI 2020 on your new Windows 10 computer (even if this is in trial mode) and make a full disk backup of that new computer before doing anything else.

Do NOT attempt to restore a backup of your Windows 7 computer (OS & applications) to your Windows 10 one - you will only give yourself a potential nightmare to deal with!

On the Windows 7 computer, backup only your user data, i.e. Documents, Photos, Music, etc to your external backup drive.

Connect the backup drive to your Windows 10 computer and recover your User data to where you want to have it.
Personally, I would recommend keeping your user data on a separate partition than your C: OS partition.
If the Windows 10 computer only has a large Windows C: partition, then download a copy of the free MiniTool Partition Wizard software and resize that partition to create a separate D: data partition, then recover the user data to that new partition.

If you have applications that you want on Windows 10, then reinstall these from new on that computer.  You may have to activate any applications that are licensed for specific hardware, i.e. Microsoft Office..
