Need Help Moving to New Computer
I have a new computer on the way and need help moving to the new computer and giving my existing computer to grandson. I own Acronis 2020 and my existing computer has a full backup on a 6TB internal HHD.
Existing computer: Windows 10 Pro - 2TB M.2 NVMe boot drive - 2TB SSD (data drive) - 2TB & 6TB HHD (Backups).
New computer: Windows 10 Home - 1TB M.2 NVMe boot drive.
1. I need to upgrade new computer to Windows 10 Pro (I think $100 online update will work) This is optional if I can move the Windows Home from the new computer to my old Windows 10 Pro computer. Is there an easy way to make my new computer Windows 10 Pro - and my old computer Windows 10 home, or is Windows 10 license linked to the machine id of each computer?
2. I need the new computer to have Windows 10 Pro and all the drives (including 2TB M.2 NVMe Boot Drive) from my old computer.
3. The old computer (given to my grandson) can use the (New) 1 TB M.2 NVMe as boot drive and have Windows 10 Home.
4. How do I make or assign my grandson as the owner of my old computer? (Microsoft sign in and account)
5. Most important - what is the best procedure to accomplish all of these needs. Does this work require Disk Director as well, or any other program I haven't thought of?
I can start with a windows clean install on each computer and reinstall all programs then copy all data files. Just don't know where to start and how exactly to do it. I know there are programs to move applications from on computer to a different computer but that just does not seem as good as a clean install of windows and applications. With an Acronis backup of my old computer I should be able to copy all my data files to the new computer, is that correct? Please help.
Any suggestion, tips or help would be most appreciated.
Thanks

Enchantech :
Thanks for your suggestion.
That sound much easier than I thought. What about computer names? Do they stay with computer or do they move with Windows? My old computer will be moved out of this house (network). I have some software that is assigned to "computer names" like Norton and possibly even Acronis.

The names should stay with the associated disk drive so I would not perceive this to be an issue.

Ok thanks - I'll give it a try. Is there a thanks button somewhere??

No thanks button but you can mark a thread solved on your first post. You can do so after you see how it goes for you too.

Enchantech, if the Windows licenses are OEM (and I assume they are), what is expected when booting up to a different motherboard as far as activation goes?

I've been doing some research and it does look like a problem with OEM Windows. From what I read if you have retail Windows 10, then you just re-input the windows key, but if OEM it's tied to the hardware.
So given that - What's the best way to accomplish what I need?
Looks like I may have to buy an upgrade for the Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro on the new computer ($100). Backup my new and old computer with Acronis True Image. Swap M.2 cards between computers. Boot new computer with Acronis True Image recovery usb and recover new computer backup to the 2TB drive on my new computer. Reinstall all programs and recover data files from the Acronis backup of my old computer. On the old computer, I could probably just do a clean install of windows 10 pro from a thumb drive. Maybe that's what I do with the new computer as well.
Yep, I need some clarification here. Am I on the right track? Anyone with other suggestions?

Since Windows 10 update 1607 the licensing requirement has changed and it is now possible to Reactivate a license. Reactivation applies to all licenses both retail and oem. MS is finally recognizing that when you purchase a PC most Windows installs are OEM and you are paying for and being changed for the license. I am providing a link below to help you accomplish that.

It worked great. Switched m.2 drives. The new computer had my old computer name and vice versa for the old computer. I renamed the computers as they should be, new computer with the new name and old computer with the old name. Just a few driver updates and it all worked well except for Windows 10 activation. Had to activate Windows 10 Home x64 over the phone with Microsoft. MS sent me to new egg - and newegg gave me an OEM key. Then I upgraded W10 Home to W10 Pro online and it took my money but failed to activate. Talked to MS again over the phone and they fixed it. Looks like the only real issue is Windows Activation, witch was an easy fix. Drivers for me were not a problem at all.
Again, "It worked great"
THANKS
