"No current partition"

Thread needs solution

Each of the three Windows 10 machines I have backs up to its own 2tb USB portable drive. Every now and then the backup fails with the message "No current partition."

What that error message -really- means, is that there's not enough space on the destination complete the backup.

I have just submitted feedback from within ATI 2020 suggesting that the current error message is not only misleading, but also not at all helpful. I have requested the error message be changed to something that actually describes why the backup failed.

And as with a lot of things I've found with this version, when an error occurs and there's a link to the KB, most of the time the KB says "we don't have any further information about this issue." (Or something like that.) Again, not helpful at all. If there's no KB for the error, then don't have a link to a KB. It's not rocket science.

Fred, the issue with the links to the KB document store has been raised many times before and the answer from Acronis is that they use these 'hits' to determine when a new KB document needs to be created for issues being flagged by many users.

Fully agree that many of the current error messages could be a whole lot clearer in identifying the root cause of any issues. No current partition will never suggest to me that the destination drive doesn't have enough free space!

Thanks Steve. I appreciate the 'reason' for the no KB documents. And for your support on the 'no current partition' error message.

Somewhat related... do you  happen to know if when I enable "Show notification message on insufficient free disk space" under Options > Notifications, if the notification is a Windows pop-up type message, or an email? The reason for the ask is that one of my machines is headless and I rarely need to remote in to it. A Windows pop-up notification of low disk space would do me no good here. I do have every backup send an email so I know if it was successful or not. But it's a little unclear about how this notification would appear.

Thanks.

The notification message for insufficient free space will try to show a message to the user via the display but if you have the further email settings set correctly, you would also be sent an email about the task requiring user intervention.

See the ATI 2020 User Guide section on the above.

Free disk space threshold

You may want to be notified when the free space on the backup storage becomes less than the specified threshold value. If after starting a backup Acronis True Image 2020 finds out that the free space in the selected backup location is already less than the specified value, the program will not begin the actual backup process and will immediately inform you by displaying an appropriate message. The message offers you three choices - to ignore it and proceed with the backup, to browse for another location for the backup or to cancel the backup.

If the free space becomes less than the specified value while the backup is being run, the program will display the same message and you will have to make the same decisions.

Additional notification settings:

  • To send a notification concerning a process completion, select the Send notification upon operation's successful completion check box.
  • To send a notification concerning a process failure, select the Send notification upon operation failure check box.
  • To send a notification with operation messages, select the Send notification when user interaction is required check box.
  • To send a notification with a full log of operations, select the Add full log to the notification check box.

I have all four of the additional notifications enabled, yet I have never seen an email telling me that user interaction is needed. Perhaps the program doesn't realize that "no current partition" means the user has to clear some space at the destination. I do indeed get emails on both successful b/u  and on failures.

Perhaps another issue to raise via feedback and to support.

Your explanation for this error is not completely correct...I am backing up to a 5TB hard drive with over 3.5TB free and get the error constantly when trying to store 500 gigs or so. I also have all the additional notifications checked and never receive any kind of message other than the one that states the backup failed. There is something besides insufficient space causing this message.

a) You're reply to a thread that is just about a year old.

b) I have given up on Acronis in favor of Macrium Reflect 7.

Well it's still happening and I have seen nothing to fix it.

Hello Kevin,

looking at the reported support cases, I can tell that the issue has multiple causes, one of them - insufficient space in the target location. Some cases were also resolved by re-adding the failing backup to the list. I'd try this workaround

- Open Acronis True Image
- Select the backup
- Click on drop down arrow and click on delete.
- Choose the option "Remove" or "Settings only"(do not select "Remove entirely" option)
- In the Backup section, at the bottom of the backup list, click the arrow icon, and then click Add existing backup. Restart the backup task.

all what is said here looks like crap. i get curent partition constantly and i am sure i have plenty of space cause another backup to the same drive works perfectly and that backup is lots bigger then the backup that gives that error. so i am almost ready to switch backup software cause acronis is realy becoming garbage. if anyone has the solution i like to hear that cause i also deleted that backup and made a new one few times then it goes 2 times after that i get the error again so its getting worse and worse . and its  NOT  a matter of insufficiant space. sp what is it???????

John, the 'no current partition' error is usually caused by the unique volume identifier for the partition changing which can be caused by a Windows version or build update, i.e. updating Windows 11 to 23H2, or by restoring a backup to the partition etc.

Reselecting the partition in either the Source or Destination settings for the backup task should normally be sufficient to resolve the issue (depending on which partition is giving the message).
