True Image 2020 unable to restore

Thread needs solution

I was uninstalling some apps when I noticed that something had gone wrong big time. I've been running ATI 2020 on my desktop nightly and storing the incremental backups on a hard drive devoted just to backups. In the past, I have recovered my boot drive without any issues but tonight I cannot get the recovery working. My boot drive is a 1TB SSD, net capacity is 931GB, 362GB is used and 569GB is free space.

I'd like to recover using the latest incremental backup. I think I've done everything correctly, see the image, but the "Recover now" button remains grayed out. I also read the ATI help and I think I performed all of the steps correctly.

Suggestions?????

Hello John.

Please perform the recovery with the B.media/ AUR as the program suggests in the picture.

https://kb.acronis.com/ati2020/aur

Please let us know if that solved the issue.

Thanks.

I notice at the bottom of the screenshot the "recover" button is green, so try clicking on it.

It looks like you are recovering from within Windows, and as it is the system drive, Acronis will reboot into temporary Linux installation which may not have the drivers needed to do the recovery. That is why it is best to use the Windows RE recovery USB drive (called something like "simple" or "basic" recovery media.

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, I'm attempting to restore a Win10 desktop and I was attempting to do everything using the windows TI app. In the past, I was able to recover in windows without any issues using TI. If I recall correctly I had no issues.

Nothing has changed on the desktop with respect to hardware for several months (almost a year) and TI has been creating incremental backups nightly.

Earlier tonight I create two different bootable thumb drives. Both are 32GB and both are formatted as FAT32. For some reason, TI did not see one of the drives but I could see the contents in Windows Explorer.

However, the real issue with the thumb drives is different. One, TI could not see. The other, after changing the boot order to start with the thumb drive the system would not boot from the thumb drive. I highly suspect that I did something wrong.

Ian, yes the "recover" button is green but it is a different green than what I see on active green buttons. When I mouse over it the cursor does not change and when I click on the button nothing happens.

Ian, In the past, I created several different TI thumb drives. The stickers I put on them are (1) Acronis MVP Boot, (2) Acronis Restore, (3) Acronis Linux, (4) Acronis Restore S4 (S4 is what I call my desktop), (5) Acronis Universal Restore (this was tonight), (6) Acronis Universal Restore (this was the 2nd one tonight.

I'm very tired and confused and need to get some sleep. I'll give it another try late tomorrow. However, I'm open for suggestions.

Ian, what is a Windows RE recovery USB drive, I need the dummies explaination version .

Does it make any difference if the thumb drive is formatted FAT32 or NTFS? Normally I will format all of my thumb drives as NTFS.

John, the Acronis rescue media using USB needs to be formatted as FAT32, not NTFS, and should be 32GB or less with a min size of 2GB with the later versions.

Windows PE based rescue media is recommended because it provides best compatibility with your installed hardware devices and can be created using the PE and drivers found in your Windows Recovery Environment, plus it also provides the option to inject any additional device drivers should these be needed.

The media can be created using the built-in tool by selecting the 'Simple' method, or if you need to inject drivers, then select 'Advanced' then still select to use WinRE for the PE files.

Alternatively, you can use the latest MVP Assistant tool which will do the same but also include additional tools to use in the offline environment, i.e. file manager, PDF viewer, image capture, PE desktop, web browser etc.

MVP Assistant Version 2.6.3 is available.

Darn, I have no idea what happened to my last post to this thread. I cannot remember everything I put in it. I'm about to try the Thumb Drive I created using "Bootable Rescue Media Builder" under tools in the app.

I seem to be going in huge circles and not getting anywhere. I downloaded the "MVP Assistant tool" and attempted to create a bootable thumb drive with it but I fail to understand how to do it with the tool.

I open the README.txt file and see the following:

To install the MVP Assistant.
- Unzip the release into a single folder.
- Run the application.
- Click on the I Agree button on the splash screen.
- Review the Help sections to get a feel for the program.
- If desired, go to Settings to make any desired changes.

I unzip the file I downloaded, I start the app (MVPAssistant.exe), I see the splash screen, after a few seconds the splash screen disappears and a window titled "MVP Assistant for Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office and True Image 2.6.3" opens.

In the left nav pane I see

  • Log Viewer
  • System Configuration
  • Acronis Configuration
  • MVP Guidelines
  • Settings
  • Help

I don't see any option to create a bootable thumb drive

I attempted to boot with the thumb drive I created with the "Bootable Rescue Media Builder" under tools in the app and get the following:

  • Disk error
  • Press any key to restart

At this point, I'm in a never ending loop until I press the reset button on the PC.

Somewhere along the line, I downloaded "Custom WinPE-based Media Builder" and will give it a try or redo "Bootable Rescue Media Builder" under tools in the app. It appears that my previous download was for the MPV Assistant and is an earlier version, thus I will NOT try it.

Drat!!!

I could not determine how to use the "MVP Assistant" to create an Acronis bootable thumb drive so I used the "Acronis Universal Restore" in TI.

The "E" drive is my thumb drive

I restarted the PC, went into the BIOS and changed the boot order

Saved the change and the boot continued but encountered an error.

This puts me in an endless loop.

As a test I replaced the thumb drive with a Windows Build 1090 build thumb drive. I reset the PC and it booted using the Windows Build 1090 build. To me, this confirms that I was doing everything correctly when I created the Acronis boot thumb drive. I have no idea if I did something wrong.

I really need to restore the PC to the configuration I had on 05/31. Currently, it is somewhat of a mess.

John, just dealing with the MVP Assistant tool, then you should be seeing a Rescue Media option in the left column in-between MVP Guidelines and Settings.

If you are not seeing that option, then the first check to make is to open Settings then select Rescue Media from the top set of tabs and ensure that you have set the location for the Rescue Media Project Base Folder which the tool will use.

I was going to embed an image showing the above from my system but unfortunately the forum is playing up again and that option isn't working for me!!

The MVP Assistant requires running as Administrator for the Rescue Media Builder component. It appears that you are not running the application as Administrator.

Bingo!!!

In my file manager, I right-clicked "MVPAssistant.exe" and selected "run as admin", I see the splash screen and NOW in the main window I do see "Rescue Media". BTW I have v2.6.3

I then attempted to create a bootable MVP Assistant thumb drive. I was confused by the window I saw and started to guess as to what I should do, I got to the following but was so lost.

I was not able to find anything that would take me down the necessary path. The Help (bottom left corner of the above) did not help me. The info may be in the help file but I could not connect the dots.

Sorry to be so dense but I cannot determine the logic of the process. I need the detailed dummies explanation with lots of pictures.

Question: If I right-click on "MVPAssistant.exe" and select properties, then click on the "Compatibility" tab I see an option "Run the program as an administrator". Why is this not selected as the default? As I now understand it is necessary to run it as admin.

John, see forum topic: How to create ACPHO rescue media with AUR included that I created late last year which should give you a good walk through how the MVP Assistant rescue media tool is used.

John,

1. I created a desktop shortcut to the MVP Assistant, and for the shortcut I set the property to always run as Administrator.

2. Simplest method to create media is...
1st, create a new project
2nd, Image/Source... to select and load a wim source. Best to use WinRE.
3rd, Build/Auto build USB drive (make sure you have a drive available)

Advanced mode gives you control over applications, drivers and packages. Auto build is only available in EZ-Mode and just does the default.

FYI, if you go to the top pinned topic on this forum, the first post contains a link to a PowerPoint slide show I did when I released the first version of the rescue builder. This might help understand things, although there have been some changes since.

Sorry, but I cannot find the page with the PowerPoint slide show. Can you give me a URL?

John, see ACPHO forum topic: MVP Assistant - New 2.0 with Rescue Media Builder (New Version 2.6.3) where you can find the PowerPoint link within the first post.
