Confused about B/U size and source drive capacity
Hello,
I have a Samsung 1TB SSD drive that is my OS drive that I have a backup (B/U) set up to perform. I am confused about the capacity of the "data selected" from the source disk it is showing which is "1.5TB of data selected". I don't understand how it can say I have 1.5TB of data selected to be backed up on a 1TB drive. I have the most recent version (I always update) of Acronis True Image and I am on a Win10 Pro laptop and I don't see how to review "what" it is backing up in the Advanced Settings of the backup.
I would appreciate it if someone could please explain to me how it can be backing up 1.5TB of data from a 1TB SSD. Under the concept of full disclosure, I am not a newbie, I am a help desk analyst in the corporate sector with 25 years experience.
Thank you,
Alisa

Hello,
Thank you for your reply. Where can I check the parameters of the configuration of what I am backing up and maybe create screen shots to post on this thread? I cannot figure out how to obtain that even when I check the advanced settings of the already created scheme.
Thank you,
Alisa

Alisa, first look at the main ATI GUI with your backup task selected.
The icon used for the Source panel offers a first clue:
This is an Entire PC backup icon.
This is a Disks & Partitions backup icon.
This is a Files & Folders backup icon.

Ah-Ha! I see! According to the backup settings page my master backup of my laptop's OS drive (I also am backing up my secondary physical HDD and plan on doing a BU of my old 3TB USB drive) is actually a full backup not just an OS drive backup.
Is there any way I can view and modify which folders/files it is including in that 1.5TB backup? I really prefer to keep my BUs segregated by disk.

Alisha,
Click on the Source icon and a list will appear, select Disks and partitions from the list. All your disks will appear in a list and by default your Windows system disk will be selected. At the bottom of that list you will see Show all partitions which will expand each disk and show individual partitions which you can select or deselect.

When I click on the image of the laptop in the center of the window nothing happens. When I click on the downward arrow I get a menu but it doesn't have any of the options you referenced. Here's what I see:

Alisa, sorry but this is one of the limitations of ATI when 'Entire PC' backups are involved, in that the Source cannot be changed after the task has been created!
I would recommend deleting this backup task, then making a new task where you click through on the Source panel then select Disks & Partitions and select only one specific disk at a time.

When creating a new b/u scheme what happens with the data from the old scheme? Is the new scheme able to recognize it in any useful way for the new process?
If I create a separate partition on my new 10TB USB drive is it possible to use it to make and update emergency C:/ drive clones on it using Acronis? If not then is it something that the Win10 Pro OS can do successfully and not have an issue with the selected drive not being physically installed but rather connected through USB?

Alisa, if you click on the Delete option for your Entire PC backup task, you will be shown a further pop up panel asking if you want to delete everything or just remove the task settings from the panel?
If you just remove the task settings, your backup files will be left on your backup drive, otherwise everything related to the task will be deleted.
There is no way to reuse only part of the Entire PC backup with a new task.

Sorry but No! An Acronis Clone is a duplication of one disk to a second disk, the target cannot just be a partition on your 10TB USB drive, and if you were to attempt this, the whole drive would be wiped!
Windows 10 does not provide a method of creating a clone in that way either to my knowledge.
The best use for your new 10TB USB drive is to use it to store regular scheduled backup images of your OS drive, where it will be able to hold multiple backups covering a broad period of time.

Ok, so I can delete just the task. That is good. The b/u data from the task I will be replacing, if I leave that intact is it functionally usable if I ever want to recover from it or will I only be able to recover from the new task's b/u?

If you just remove the task from the application, the data will remain usable for as long as you keep it for. You can always use the 'Add existing backup' option to add it back into the task list again if needed, or else can use the files with the Acronis bootable rescue media for recovery operations.

Perfect! This solves all of my problems and questions...... I have already used one of my novelty flash (this one is Garfield the cat) drives to create my rescue media.
Thank you so much for your help.
