Rescue media backup removing restore points

Thread needs solution

Before working on a PC, I backup the disk either in situ using the rescue boot media, or by removing the disk and attaching to a PC and using TI installed on that other PC.

For some time it has been a frustration to me that doing either of these things will remove all the system restore points from the drive. I have seen posts that attempt to explain this away as a result of something VSS is doing, but I'm not clear how this can be happening when using the boot media. I would think an essential function of TI would be to be able to create a backup copy without affecting the original data.

I can reliably create this, simply by checking in Windows Recovery that a drive has system restore points, booting from the rescue media and creating a backup then booting again and checking again in Windows Recovery and seeing that the restore points are gone.

When I use TI to backup a machine before I start working on it, it's unacceptable that that backup process removes an option that could be used to repair the machine. It is defeating the very purpose for which I need TI.

I was hoping that in upgrading to 2021 I would see this problem fixed, but it is still there. I will have to find an alternative tool if this cannot be fixed or worked around.

Matt, sorry but I am not aware of any issues whereby just making a full disk backup of any disk will remove any restore point data from the source drive!

By default, the backup image being created will not contain restore point data because one of the default exclusions is for 'System Volume Information' which is where Windows Protection data is stored.

Obviously, if you recover / restore a disk backup image that doesn't contain this data, then it is lost at that point, but not when a backup is performed.
