restore of system partition does not work - says disk is unreadable

Thread needs solution

hello, just few days ago i upgraded to Acronic TI 2021. installed to my offline DAW pc, and made a new backup of the system partition.

today chance wanted i had a fishy file come from another computer (online macbook) - so when i was copying a folder to PC, Acronis warned me a file dllhost.exe tried to change my MBR, but that they weren't succesful in quarantining it.  (windows was still working normally at that point.)

so i thought, ok perfect oportunity to return my system back to 2 days ago and have everything dissapear,  as i have done in the past with acronis.  i first verified the backup file, then chose the recovery option like always, and computer restarted...

recovery started but was soon obvious it is impossibly slow and unresponsive.. showing 2 hrs estimated.

and after waiting for a while it broke the process and wrote this message:

"failed to read from sector '0' of hard disk '2'direct R/W operation has failed (0x590001)

when i restarted windows immediately went into scandisk for C:, and entered repair mode for windows. everything was screwed up.  once it settled down, and somehow windows managed to boot,   i tried once again, re-verifying everything,  with the same result. recovery does not work, and it of course screws up c: disk.

thing is disk that contains the backup is verified,  chkdsk ok and its new. same with SSD that contains the system.  both were/are working perfectly within windows.

never seen something like this, and have used acronis previously. backup of os would usually take 5 minutes, and recovery aprox 7 minutes with restarts included, when all was going smooth.

also have another, new DAW machine with the second acronis licence that i backed up few days ago as well, and now i am afraid to even try testing recovery, for fear its going to screw up my existing OS with fresh installations of windows, acronis and brand new cubase.  losing that is complicated on many levels. since i am using the "install on a offline computer" option.

any help is much appreciated.

regards, Tom

Tom, welcome to these public User Forums.

There look to be several different issues involved in this topic.

The 'failed to read from sector...' of any disk potentially suggests a disk problem where the disk number used by Acronis is counted differently from how Windows counts.  Acronis starts at disk 1 but Windows starts at disk 0.  This means when you identify 'disk 2' in the Acronis error message, you need to be looking at Windows disk 1 in disk management and when using CHKDSK.

The 'segmentation' fault is often associated with memory problems or it may be caused if using the older Linux based rescue media (or if the restore was started from within Windows which launches a temporary Linux environment).

The recommendation when doing any restore of Windows OS drive or partition, is to create the 'Simple' Windows PE version of the rescue media and use this to boot the PC ensuring that the rescue media is booted using the same BIOS mode as the OS also uses.
