Systemdrive 67GB backup file 12,5GB?

Thread needs solution

I am totally new to Acronis and have just made my first backup. Strangely my systemdrive have taken up 67GB of space but when I create a backup the file only uses 12,5GB of storage.

I can't imagine that the compression could be that good. Something must be wrong. Is there any guides to how to do it properly?

In the end I want to have a backup ready if my harddrive fails with all my programs, setting and so forth.

Compression is part of it. Also, there are a number of things that are by default excluded as they are not important to the restoration, e.g. temp files, Recycle Bin, swap file, page file, System Volume Information, browser caches, etc.

Go to the settings for the backup and look at the exclusions.

Another source of 'compression' is that file space on disk is allocated in 'clusters' (depending on you setup/os from 512bytes to 8192, and higher. 4096 probably the most common). So a file containing just a single character could be using the space of 4000+ characters. The backup will only store the actual data, plus some overhead [unless you are using "sector-by-sector backup" option (the default is NOT).

The 'validate' function should confirm you backup is good.

You can also click on the first .tibx file of a backup and browse through the folders and files to see what is stored in the backup.

BUT the only way you can be CERTAIN your backup is truly a life-saver is to actually restore it (onto a DIFFERENT disk, or computer) and ensure it boots and has all your programs and data.
