TI 2021 kills network connection

Thread solved

I upgraded from an unused but installed TI 2020 to TI 2021 and configured it to perform backup to a Windows Server 2019 share. Total volume about 4 TB. Somewhen during backup the local LAN connection drops (Intel i219-V onboard adapter with most current drivers), which affects all local and Internet connectivity (globe icon in tray).

After a while connectivity seems to resume on its own, can be forced by disable/enable network card in device manager.

Before TI I used Windows Home Server for Backup, here I never experienced this kind of behavior.

Olaf, I have not seen anyone else reporting any issues with network connections when using any recent version of ATI, and haven't seen any such issues on my own PC's when backing up to my local network NAS boxes.

If ATI is using the default performance settings then it should not cause your network adapter to be overloaded etc.  They type of destination server / location shouldn't make a difference as far as I understand.

I would suggest looking at the backup logs created by ATI 2021 for your backup task to see if these offer any more information on what Acronis 'thinks' is happening for this scenario?

There is a new MVP Assistant log viewer tool that has now been made available by Acronis via the Community Tools page..

If you have Disks & Partitions backups created on ATI 2020 or later using .tibx files, then look in the Backup Worker logs.

If you have Files & Folders backups using .tib files (or Disk backup using same) then look in the Demon logs.

The log files should be zipped to preserve their original file names if sharing in the forums and would need to be less than 3MB in size, otherwise you would need to share the zip file via a Cloud share service such as OneDrive, Dropbox etc.

What version of Windows are you running on the client PC?  Version Win 10 2004 and 20H2 have been reported to have these drops in connectivity of networks.

Are you connecting with Ethernet or WiFi?

Of the reported connection issues above it seems that DNS has a role.

Its an Gigabit Ethernet connection. Windows 10 version is 20H2.

I already reduced the usable bandwidth in Acronis TI with no great success.

If the issue happens, the system drops all network connectivity, the NIC in the machine can be pinged, but no other system in the LAN. Disable/enable network adapter - back to normal immediately, otherwise it seems to fix itself after some time. Switch involved is a D-Link DGS-1210-24.

Next test will be to disable Virus scanner during backup (ESET Endpoint Security in use).

Olaf,

I would suggest checking to make sure your Windows install is up to date as the October Windows update had a bug that caused network connection drops.

If you find no failed updates and Windows update says you are up to date then I would suggest powering down all you network connections and then starting them back up again.  This will reset the connections and possibly correct the behavior.

The reference to the D-Link DGS-1210-24 immediately raised the possibility of the problem being with the switch. I have had problems with D-Link green switches which can go ferrel resulting in substantially reduced throughput. The DGS-1210-24 is in a different league to the ones I have used, but it does have "D-Link Green" functionality so I would suggest rebooting the switch (if you have not already tried that).

I think I got the culprit now.

In Control Panel/Network and Sharing Center/Change Adapter Settings I found some filter drivers in the Ethernet connection properties: One for an older version of Netbalancer (which I once installed at a time in which MS Updates claimed the full Internet bandwidth) and one for the VPN software. I disabled both for testing and since then there are no connection drops anymore.

I assume Netbalancer as the cause, but further testing must wait until the initial backup is finished.

Thanks for all your replies

I have had a similar problem with the ethernet adapter on my Microsoft Surface computer over the last few weeks upon completion of an ATI 2021 backup to a local drive.  When the backup is finished, I discover there is no internet connection.  I have run the Windows troubleshooter which either indicates the adapter has been disabled, or that it cannot find the problem.  Only restarting the computer seems to clear the error.  I am running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, OS build 19042.746, and ATI 2021 build 35860.

I have tried reviewing the Windows Event Viewer and the ATI backup worker logs, but do not see anything that jumps out at me.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thank you.

Robert
