Windows 10 2004 and SSDs issue

Thread needs solution

Although not a True Image issue, we here are concerned about our disks. I've been reading of an issue with Windows 10 2004 and SSDs whereby it is doing excessive defrags of the SSDs. Apparently it's been known for a while, but still not fixed. There is a workaround.

Bruno, that is odd, because SSD should not be defragmented at all. Not sure how trim would work on an HDD!

On my systems all SSD and HDDs are correctly classified when looking at the defrag tool; all running 2004.

My systems with SSDs are still on 1909. I always wait 6 months after release to get the big updates.

Anyway, the last paragraph of the article referenced above explains the issue...

This issue was confirmed in numerous tests by BleepingComputer, where the automatic maintenance tool would perform a defrag of an SSD every time after a reboot. On the other hand, if you launch an optimization directly from the 'Optimize Drives' screen, an SSD drive will not be defragged and will only execute the Trim function.

Ian, check right after a reboot to assure its not running a defrag.

Will do so if I remember.

Ian

Thanks Bruno. This was very helpful. I've taken the advice.

Thanks Bruno,

+1,  I just upgraded one of my machines a couple of days ago to 2004.  All SSD's have been removed from the auto optimization list.  Will do so on the rest of my PC's as needed.  I never trust theses automated we know what's best for you practices implemented by MS or any other company for that matter.

I am trying to post a new question.  Clicking SAVE takes me here.  What am I doing wrong?

For all other posters to this old thread:

The link below is the real deal on SSD/HDD and Windows Disk Optimization.  SSD defrag is something that is done via optimization however, one must keep in mind that an SSD having an onboard controller to manage the disk, will control what, when, and how maintenance optimization is applied to the disk.
