Cannot Boot from VM (ESXi 4) backing up dynamic disks - v9.7

Thread needs solution

Hi Guys,

I'm attempting to restore a Windows Svr 2003 Std box from an acronis backup to a VM server for DR purposes and to test an upgrade. I'm getting an (0x0000007B) error on boot which points to an inaccessible boot device issue, I noticed the disks within Windows were Dyamic, and mirrored, which I've removed leaving them all as simple dynamic disks. The error remains, I've tried copying symmpi.sys & vmscsi.sys together with these registry keys:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\symmpi
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CriticalDeviceDatabase\ pci#ven_1000&dev_0030
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vmscsi

from a working svr 2003 std vm, and tried adding them to the restored vm using BartPE but realised this was probably a long shot.

Has anyone any ideas how to fix this problem? I need to backup using acronis and restore using acronis rather than vm converter in order to complete a DR test :(

Any pointers would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Chris
