1) Problem with restore 2) Premium does not create Universal Restore on Bootable Media
There are two questions one about Universal Restore not showing up on my bootable thumb drive made from Premium and ultimately trying to create a foolproof method of backup and restoration to my, my wife's, and daughter's system. We have three Dells which are old and I am going to build a new PC for myself with an SSD OS and Data and backup HDs. My plan is to use TI just for OS backup and a simple sync bit for bit program for our data. I may clone the OS to an extra drive, leave it in the computer, and unplug it leaving just two active drives. I have not figured out the best way yet.
Here is what I did. I did a clean install on the 3100 and used a program, profile relocater to move the profiles but not applications data to a logical partition, D: on the same drive. http://software.bootblock.co.uk/?id=profilerelocator (Yes, I know I can't upgtrade to 8.1 but I always do clean installs if I decide to go to 8.1 which I am still uncertain.
Then I loaded programs and set up wife as admin and daughter as user and used Acronis (from Windows) to first back of the c: od and then the d: profiles.
Next wiped the drive of the E510, and used the thumb drive with bootable Acronis to first restore the 5100 C: and then D: to the E510's single drive. This is when I first noticed that Acronis Universal Restore was NOT available at all on the bootable program. I did see it when experimenting with the windows full program but againk, not on the thumb drive. I did create it from my version of Premium so I don't know what happened. Anyway, the E510 worked just fine.
Now comes the real experiment. I used the same backup to attempt to load to two different drives on the E520. There was a 80 gig drive that I was able to restore the OS. However, when I tried to restore the profiles as I had done before on the D: drive, it would not restore. Sorry, I don't know what happened in terms of log which I read but gave me no answers. The backup was still valid...just would not load. The computer would boot but since the profiles did not load I could not enter a password and get into the OS. This may be a problem with what I am trying to do.
The instructions for profile relocater tell you when doing a clean install to use a temporary admin name which you then delete. I see this is probably not a good idea. If using this method, probably should keep an admin...say Z on the os drive.
However, this now comes to the question as to why I was able to restore to a single drive, but not to two separate ones. In theory, it should not matter. I read a rather complicated way to move both the user and application data to another drive. However, I am wondering if doing this will give me the same problem. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/win7-ho...
Because my wife needed her computer right away, I simply cloned the E510's drive and put it in the E520 without any problem. However, my intent was to give her two drives. Maybe that is overkill for her system but I wanted to try it before I build my new computer with an SSD. Now, suppose I had done a clean install on the E520 with its two drives and then did my backups from it. Would it have worked?
I wonder if I would be better off doing a clean install and NOT moving the user folder and using the "locations" tab to move the respective folders. It just seems so stupid that one cannot easily move all the data to a different drive including the application data. I have read a lot of posts on the web about the issue and people find it annoying and why they use other OSs.
Again, I just cannot figure out why my premium does not create a bootable thumb drive that has Universal Restore on it. I assume my restores worked because they are all Dell units of the same age, 2005; or maybe it was just luck.
