1.01 TB Partion backup takes DAYS running around the clock

Thread needs solution

I'm using Acronis True Image Home 2011 Build 3, to back up my primary partition, 1.01 TB of a 2 TB hard drive (1.81 TB formated NTFS), backing up to a 2TB WD Hard Drive in a USB 3.0 Enclosure on a dedicated USB 3.0 port. Nothing else on that USB 3.0 port or even the entire USB 3.0 PCIe card.

A full backup takes, get this, four to five days running around the clock. I don't get it. When I'm not running a backup, file transfers, back and forth, to and from this drive, are fine. Normal median USB 3.0 speeds.

Why on Earth is it taking this long to run a full backup? Incremental backups are also taking a long time. A 1.5 to 2 GB incremental backup may take a couple of hours to run.

This is ridiculous. Anyone have any clues why? Any guesses?

There are many factors that effect performance of the product. If you have a lot of data that is already compressed such as video or MP3 files this will tend to drag out the backup process because the app will attempt to further compress such files but little gain will result and the processing time will be significant. The level of compression you select in the app for the backup is another area that can significantly impact performance if you choose a high compression level. The higher the level the slower the process. The link below can help explain some of these things in a bit more detail and may be of benefit to you.

Thanks. I just checked - my default settings are "normal compression".

I do have a lot of compressed data, both video and MP3's, 330 GB of video and 120 GB of music. I hadn't thought about that affecting the backup times, and I'm no novice on this either - duh! Next go around, I will back them up differently, like just copying them to another drive.

Yes, that is definitely a viable alternative and should in turn reduce your backup time considerably.
