2012 Backup to Network share broken

Thread needs solution

I downloaded the 2012 trial and tried to perform a simple backup to a network share on a different Windows 7-64 bit system. This always seems to fail in several ways.

When I get to the 'Disk Backup' panel where I need to enter the destination file, I first tried specifying a destination on a network drive letter that's already mapped on my system as the 'H:" drive.

This causes a very long delay despite entering the correct credentials. (Actually, why did it even want credentials in the first place since this drive was already mapped?).

Eventually I got the error message "Failed to check the existence of the file 'H:\Test@date@.tib":

"More information about this error and solutions may be available online in the Acronis Knowledge Base.
To access the online resource manually, enter the event code at: http://kb.acronis.com/errorcode/
Event code: 0x0064000D+0x00040014+0x0000FFF0+0x800704C3"

Ignoring this and trying the backup anyway eventually results in "Acces to file denied" and

"More information about this error and solutions may be available online in the Acronis Knowledge Base.
To access the online resource manually, enter the event code at: http://kb.acronis.com/errorcode/
Event code: 0x00040014+0x0000FFF0+0x800704C3"

I then tried to browse the 'Network' for the system where the H drive was already mapped. This resulted in very long delays (30-60 seconds at least) . Sometimes I could see the shared drives listed, sometimes not.

Opening the Windows7 (64-Bit) Computer/Network folder I can browse the system/drive in question without any delay.

So, at present, I am unable to specify a destination on a shared drive on another Windows 7 system (even though I can drag and drop files from Windows Explorer with ease to the same destinations...).

Is there some trick to making this work?

Thanks;

-Greg

Acronis products are not overly happy with mapped drives, try using a UNC path.

You might need to delete the NAS credentials out of Windows Credential Manager, before TIH2012 will allow you access to the NAS again. You will need to enter your credentials once per task.

> You might need to delete the NAS credentials out of Windows Credential Manager

The Windows 7 Credential Manager seems to say there are no remembered credentials. Trying to Browse by URL doesn't help.

I can go to the 'Browse for Destination Panel' and select Desktop/Network/System Name, but it doesn't populate. If I go to 'Edit Credentials' on the 'Browse for Destination' panel, I can 'Connect' without a problem... It's just nothing actually works (I don't see any of the files/drives).

Booting the TIH 2012 Boot Media seems to work much better in this regard. I can browse and select a destination without an apparent issue (after entering my user-ID/password). But, being the trial media I can't actually try the backup...

I also tried out Norton Ghost 15 and this didn't seem to have any problem with Network drives.

Have you tried a repair install, this might do the trick.

> Have you tried a repair install, this might do the trick.

Not yet, but I think I found the problem (well at least that problem...).

I can get this to work (albeit with various other delays and quirks) if I un-map all the mapped drives to the server I want to back-up to. Apparently having a mapped drive to where you want to go makes TIH sad (when you might of thought this was the easiest to handle because it already appears as a connected drive...). Well, at least with my setup.

After removing all the Windows mapped drives to the server I wanted to back up to, I was able to browse to the url and set up the backup.

With a drive mapped (and TIH 2012 trying to browse) I saw:

">net use
New connections will be remembered.

Status Local Remote Network

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK H: \\r3f\h-disk Microsoft Windows Network
The command completed successfully."

Running TIH 2012 without the drive mapped yields:

">net use
New connections will be remembered.

Status Local Remote Network

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK \\R3F\IPC$ Microsoft Windows Network
The command completed successfully."

I still noticed some unexpected quirks/delays while setting up the name though.

1) If I go to try and alter the Destination backup name by going to Edit Backup Settings/Destination/Browse, I can change the
'file name' field on the 'Browse for Destination' panel without apparent problem.

While on the 'Browse for Destination Panel', if I first browse to a Network/Server Name/Disk name (so that the destination
drives contents are displayed), then changing the 'file name' field is pretty rugged. Even if I just hit backspace, every character
results is a long delay.

It looks like they are re-connecting every keystroke or something similar. Overall, browsing through the server disks/files is
still slower and 'jerkier' than doing the equivalent in native Windows Explorer.

2) I also noticed that I was able to make a backup, delete that backup file with Windows explorer, and then make
an incremental backup. TIH 2012 didn't seem to notice that the 'base' backup was not there... It only noticed on
a verify/Recover attempt.

At any rate, I have a workaround for my initial problem. But, removing any mapped drives for a server I want to back-up to is not a viable long-term option. TIH 2012 should learn to play nice with mapped drives present.

I currently have TIH 2011, but I'm still using TIH 2010 because of numerous problems with 2011 (the last time I tried it) and a displeasure with the 'Improved' interface of TIH 2011.

I've had TI since version 7, and it seems to me that many of the changes over the last few years only make it harder for me to do my simple 'manual' backups. I mainly want to make 'base' and incremental/differential backup manually.

I usually just want to point it at a place to make/add to a backup each time I create a backup. Maybe one day I'll get daring enough to try automated backups :-)

I'll have to play with TIH 2012 and see if I can figure out how to convert what I used to do in TIH 2010 to what I need to do in TIH 2012.

Gregory,

Are you not able to access the share via UNC - TIH prefers to deal with UNC's rather than mapped drives.

> Are you not able to access the share via UNC - TIH prefers to deal with UNC's rather than mapped drives

No. As long as I have a mapped drive present, I can't browse to a UNC on that same server. (Even though I am trying to use the UNC).

In the attached image I removed all maps to the R3F server, and added one to the ROG server (and by server I mean Windows 7 system).

I am able to 'Browse' to R3F now, but not to ROG. (If I reverse which server I have a pre-mapped drive set up to, then which server is unresponsive follows the mapped drive. At least after rebooting to remove any traces of previous activity).

Manually specifying a UNC (from the 'File name' line) to a server that doesn't have a mapped drive eventually seems to work.

I tried 'manually' specifying a UNC to ROG (when a mapped drive was present), but that didn't work. I eventually get a file not found error.

Overall, the speed of specifying a remote drive is uneven/marginal (even when it works).

He Colin,

I have same problem and never use the Mapped drive letter and again i think its not a problem of using UNC path or not.

at least for me: if i have a net drive mapped in windows and if i browse for a target lokation and use the winodws share, the target path will be the UNC path already.

If i sucessfulli create a task with target UNC path (no drive mapped) than remap the drives under windows and restart:

i can run the task sucessfully but i cant modify the task similar error as above (as i said: its targeted to an unc path!!!) .

As soon as i unmap the drives i can edit the task.

Means: there must be an conflict between Windows Netaccess and TI Explorer depending on whos started first at windows startup.

I did some services investigations and noticed that if i restart some windows service i also can acess all shares within ATI Explorer and edit tasks to network shares. (sorry cant remember the name of teh task right now, must check if i am back home today).

I am 25 years experience tech. I have same problem here. Browse for destination is bugging for network path. I tried removing all mapped drive, I reinstalling the program, using UNC path (this lead to program crash). Got following errors :

With browwse for destination (network)
Event code: 0x0064000D+0x00040014+0x0000FFF0+0x800704C3

With UNC path
Access to the file is denied :
event code: 0x00040014+0x0000FFF0+0x800704C3

Very strange because I have two identical Dell computers with WIndows7 x64. On the other computer, browse for destination went like a charm, no delays, network access everywhere, network - residential group - mapped drive and UNC path all working perfectly with the exact same Windows parameters for both of my computers ???? ...

On my wife computer, impossible to ghet a network file backup of any form, been trying everything since two days. Furthermore, everything was working before with ATI 2011 Plus pack. I did not do an update but a completly new fresh install of ATI 2012 Plus pack and family edition. Wipped out the ATI 2011 with unistall, removed all remaining directories of ATI then cleanup registry, then reboot and reinstalled ATI2012 Family and P.Pack. Both of my computers had the same type of install process of AT2012.

I don't know how you figure out to call this a family pack if two identical computers of the same family in a perfectly working network leads to those kind of erratic behavior ! ...

Hope you will update this software very soon... So far a whaste of time and money.

Hi Claude

did you get that it may help to map the drive with ip adress of your nas instead of the nas name (only hepls if your usein foixed ip, of course)?

At least for me and a few other this worked partially.

"So far a whaste of time and money"

your right, dont know how many hours i tried t o find a solution....actually not my job. My "job" is to by such a product and to use it and not to work as beta tester.

OK: Acronis is trying to fix the issue and they took care very quick about my problem but honestly this is not the only bug i nocticed (create boot media errors). I am just not willing any more to make calls for each bug i noticed.

All the tips to make an clean installation or to make an repair installl are ok and of course welcome anf have been tried by me serveral times but:

THIS is absolutly unaceptable for a product you should thrust to backup and restore your data.

I have exactly the same problem. I have Windows 7 x64 running with internal hard disks as a server. Trying to backup to that over a gigabit network from a Win 7 x64 laptop. No lettered drives mapped, just using full path "\\server-name\folder\". Acronis TI home 2012 shows my credentials are working, but then just hangs and never shows any network resources, no folders .. eventually after 20 minutes I had to force quit the program. I can back up to a local hard disk fine.

I went to open a support ticket through normal support, because I purchased this on 9/29, and it's 10/29 today. But no, even though it's still within 30 days later, Acronis shows that I can only get support by pay-per-incident. That is VERY aggravating.

This was a clean install on a new machine, no prior installations of any Acronis products. I'm an IT consultant, and an Acronis reseller, but I am definitely reconsidering that position given the support time-out 1 day early, and the buggy software not working.

I noticed after posting that the joined date on my account says 2011-10-30, but it's 10/29/11 here. Interesting way to shorten your support liability by a day - start the 30 day support contract based on US time zone (when I purchased and installed), but end it based on Europe time...

Hi there

was same for me..... i bougth the new version (thought it was 23.08) and within support area it did show that i have to pay for support also if end date of free 30 days was correct........

never the less i got my free support by contacting ATI via chat.

I am having the exact same problem. I wish I had seen some of these posts before I purchased this for my client. I cannot, in all good concience, charge them for the time that I spend trying to get this working. That means I am losing money as a direct result of TIH not working as advertised.

I'm not happy and will not be purchasing TIH for other clients.

PLEASE fix this problem.

I know for sure, that this issue will be solved in the next update of ATI 2012...
Just be patient a bit more ! ...

I upgraded to 2012 in August. The day it was released, I believe. I called in a ticket the same for some of what you all see to be expeiencing. I got a note telling me to download drivers (snapapi 640?) downloaded the driver and no change. Put in another ticket and yesterday they asked to do the same thing!!!. Last night I got my money back. I may purchase later when the NAS issue is cleared.

This is STILL not fixed? This is pretty ridiculous considering that this is a backup program. When can we expect this to be fixed??? I just checked for an update to the program and there's been no patches since I first installed. For a problem this major (ie Sev 1) it should have been fixed within days. So far it's been months and no resolution in sight and you, Acronis, appear to be ignoring your customers.

In other threads you'll see that Acronis are working on update one, whose release has been delayed due to problems found by some testers of the update.

I have had this problem too ever since I bought 2012 a few months ago. I was hoping that the update would sort the problem. Alas not...

After some thinking, I found that the best solution was to create a local FTP server on my backup PC and then create an FTP location in ATI. Worked without issue. Anyone unsure about how to create an FTP server, take a look at this: http://www.programmerfish.com/how-to-make-local-ftp-server-in-windows-7/. My backup PC is actually a Windows Server 2008, which requires a more complex setup, but if you're running one, I'm guessing you'll know what to do :o)

okay, here is my situation...

i am trying to boot from the 2012 boot media (cd/dvd) to perform a backup or restore to a network share eg. \\server\share and i'm encountering the same things that people are posting here. now from inside windows; i'm able to connect to a network share on another workstation fine or even to an external device, eg. usb hard drive. i usually boot from media to recover my devices over the network, when my workstation crashes or even my portable device does not boot up. this is a must in my book to be able to perform this function. i've tried several things and found out mixed results:

1) originally i tried connecting to a hidden share eg. \\server\admin$ and it would initially connect after passing the authentication, but it does not display folders and would constantly ask for authentication again when you tried typing the path. so i would key it in and received "connection failed please verify username or password." okay thinking that something is wrong with the share, i created a new one and the results were the same. so here is the catch; i decided to test with the 2010 BOOT MEDIA and it works FINE??? i even tried other network boot disk and it connects to the host fine and dandy...lead me to believe that the software was buggy. i submitted an issue to support and didn't get the results i was looking for...only to hold out for the next build. they sent me a boot media, build 6154...which produce the same results. waiting for the next build could take months, again i originally the got this new upgrade with all the nice features eg. synchronization that they promoted...turned out to be a disappointment even the synchronization tool's performance is to slow.

2) so i decided to double check nic drivers and updated them with the same status.
3) swapped out the network card, i went from an intel gigabit to a 3com nic 100 with the same status.
4) i even tried the ftp solution above with the same status or total unresponsiveness.

5) so, i think its time for a refund...unless somebody from acronis support can provide a concrete solution.

tqn_2012_sos,

What hardware is running your network share a QNAP NAS by any chance?

colin,

just a dedicated workstation, no nas device attached...all internal storage running windows xp professional with sp3...again i am able to boot from the 2010 boot media with no problem or any other network boot disk. this might be a combination of hardware and software issue. funny thing is i am able to connect to my laptop with their 2012 media fine, so i'm not sure what gives...but what i do expect is that the software should hold its backward compatibility unless stated otherwise...especially performing this function...disappointing. i had and issue with registering my serial keys as well, but was able to figure that out myself...again disappointing.

Just for anyone else in this situation - a little background on my problem:
Running TIH on Windows 7 Pro 64, backing up to a network machine also running 7 Pro 64.
Cannot connect to mapped network drive on Acronis, simply asks for credentials (which it doesn't need) and upon testing the connection just sits there forever, appearing to do nothing. "Back up system" box is greyed out.

My fix - use FTP connection in Acronis, as specified in the post by HelsinkiSisu (thanks!). HOWEVER, it still didn't work off the bat. Fortunately, FileZilla (which is providing my free FTP server) basically told me the problem up front - Acronis was repeatedly trying to use IPv6 commands towards an IPv4 connection. I went through, unchecked IPv6 in Local Area Connection adapter settings, and reconnected to FTP. All is good now. I wonder if this is related to the problem with drive mapping? Hmmmm....

I didn't have any use for IPv6 on this network as it was, we're behind NAT and there are only about 7 machines here so it's all good. If you have a similar setup, this workaround should be good for you too. Kind of a pain to have to set up an FTP server just for backups, but it works for me so I'm happy.

Thanks again HelsinkiSisu!

That's an interesting point to check, must remember that.

Thanks Jim.

Using the FTP is a neat idea! I have Synology and it can set up an FTP to just use locally.

Hi, I also do have the same problem with backing up to a NAS mapped drive. My NAS is Synology DS 1511+ and I use ATIH 2012. I don't have anything to attach. Can't open support ticket, because of stupid Acronis policy customer can only open support within 30 days of purchase the force customers to pay for fixing their own bugs... I have nothing to attach.

THE REAL PROBLEM:

Basic function of any backup program is to be able to backup to a network share, it's fundamental demand in the backup business. This is prohiitive that software of this caliber can't do this right and software engineers can't resolve/program correctly the basic functions of file access in Windows NT. Acronis forces to use UNC directly, but this is known to be a slower method since 1990's. That's why mapped drives have been invented. What Acronis does besides simply calling OpenFileEx() and similar native Win32 APIs?

Acronis does most probably disconnect remote drives connection/credentials when selecting destination drive dialog resulting in further browsing it invalid or unusable, so people have all this problem with "path/file invalid" and "access denied" and need to manually remap and this results in backup bypassing mapped drive designation and backing up to UNC anyway. It lists all my backups done in this way and I have no more mapped drives in the system as those disappeared after using Acronis. Acronis should not be messing with those NT APIs. I do provide/type password when connecting ad-hoc to a NAS and mapping the drive manually by myself before running Acronis main UI, so the drive is nicely present. ATIH do not need to do anything else, but I imagine you do use a Windows Service to perform actual backup and storage access and services are sensitive into the context those are run within. What we see from UI supposed to work without problem, but the service needs to authenticate on a separate level before being allowed to access network drive (depends on process credentials: LocalUser or NetworkUser in Win NT/2000/XP/2008/7). So, this is real problem, that maybe customers should configure to run Acronis Background Service to run under a user account and password designated to access the server (NAS) and its drives. It seems doing it programatically fails on Acronis engineers side as they don't prompt for a password to pass to appropriate domain APIs from within a service level!. Either software should prompt and incorporate network API usage into proper manner or ask to store network credentials on a separate tab under backup task options dialog and then pass those along with the write operations on UNC.
