ATI2009 was the first versin of ATI that relies on an internal database to keep track of backups rather than using what where called Backup Locations". All versions since then have some probs with orphaning backups or failing to keep them correctly associated. Howver, the interface for ati2012 is substantially diff form ati2009. Some like it; some are not so enthusiastic -- only way to know if you will like it is to try it.

ati2012 uses active on-line activation whereas prior versions of ati did not. While Acronis has tried to make this relatively trouble free for the user, it has been troublesome for some -- it's a feature for Acronis's benefit; it doesn't add anything for the user. If you make changes to your PC, you might have to reactivate ati.

If you free-trial ati2012, first make a full diskmode backup before uninstalling ati2009 and set it aside in a safe place so you can easily restore back to pre-ati2012 if you don't like it or have probs.

ATi2012 adds some features which you can persuse at acronis.com. It adds on-line syncing although there have been some serious probs with it. It also has an automated update function, which I recommend you turn off-- sometimes a new ati2012 build is the best choice.

ATI2012 is able to accomodate more newer hardware than prior versions.

Thanks Scott, will follow your suggestion and it seems the way of your explanation that 2009 is just as good as the 2012 version or better, less problems.

If you already have 2009 and are happy with it, you may wish to keep using it. If you're getting a new computer, or new external drives, you could find that 2012 supports them better than does 2009.

I generally recommend using the oldest version that will work on your machine, going back as far as ati10 (not to be confused with ati2010). If you have Vista, then ati11; if w7, the ati 2009 or 2010.

Fewer bell sand whistles and less newer hardware supported in older version, but fewer broken bells and whistles and greater reliability, inlcuding reliability in core functions.

Note that non-current vrsions are not supported by Acronis at all; otoh, the current version is only supported for 30 days, then you have to pay additional for each episode with Tech.

Thanks, for the heads up on the 2012, will try a trial version as previously suggested.
